Why did the cutest , wiggliest couple ever keep their relationship secret?

Madeline Hoskin |

We never saw it coming … and neither did the rest of the cast, apparently!

The romance between Emma Watkins and Lachlan Gillespie (aka the Yellow and Purple Wiggle) is almost too sweet to be real.

From the outside, it all seemed like quite a whirlwind - they announced they were a couple, just a few months later they were engaged, and before we could dust off our yellow bow they had walked down the aisle.

But things aren’t always as they seem, with Emma and Lachie both confirming that they felt the need to keep their relationship secret for a considerable period of time before going public … the happiness of children around the world depended on it, after all!

They didn’t want people thinking it was a publicity stunt

The happily married duo recently sat down with Kate Waterhouse for a “Date with Kate” interview on her blog, and discussed why they really kept their relationship secret for so long - not just from their fans, but from the cast too.

“We thought it was a respectful thing to do,” said Lachie. “There is nothing worse … if you’ve only just started in a world-class organisation such as The Wiggles and then all of a sudden we come out that we are together … We didn’t want people to think we were just doing it for [publicity].”

That didn’t mean cast members didn’t have their suspicions. As Emma shared: “Anthony knew, definitely!”

Did they rush things?

The pair waited until they were sure it was the real deal before announcing it to everyone - but by they time that happened, Lachie was already preparing to propose (much to Emma’s surprise).

“At the time I didn’t know that Lachy had planned to propose, so … our relationship was announced, and then, about a month and a half later, our engagement,” said Emma.

“So everyone was like: whoa, whoa. For us, it felt like quite a while.”

Life, love and Wiggling

Just because their relationship is now well and truly public, that doesn’t mean their life as husband and wife is normal. They never even had a honeymoon because they’ve been so busy!

When asked about their plans to start a family, Emma laughed, “It would be really nice …. It really is almost like we have to put it in the tour schedule.”

“We don’t have a lot of time not Wiggling – we are touring six days a week, every week – but when we do have time off, we try to go and see our family.”

Not only is their schedule jam-packed, they plan to keep it that way for as long as possible. Emma’s even made a bet with Jeff Fatt (the original purple Wiggle) that she will keep Wiggling till she’s 60 years old, just like he did.

So, for anyone who feared that a romantic relationship between two Wiggles members could possibly lead to the tragic demise of Australia’s most successful children’s entertainment enterprise, you have nothing to fear. The Wiggles 2.0 are going strong, just like this pair of Wiggly lovebirds.
