Louisiana (i/luːˌiːziˈænə/ or i/ˌluːziˈænə/; French: État de Louisiane, [lwizjan]; Louisiana Creole: Léta de la Lwizyàn) is a state located in the southern region of the United States. Louisiana is the 31st most extensive and the 25th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital is Baton Rouge and largest city is New Orleans. Louisiana is the only state in the U.S. with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are the local government's equivalent to counties. The largest parish by population is East Baton Rouge Parish, and the largest by land area is Plaquemines. Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, Texas to the west, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibis and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape, and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of orchids and carnivorous plants.

Truth Wins Out released a new ad today that challenges Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal for his outspoken support of a bill that would allow business owners to cite their religious beliefs to justify discrimination against LGBT customers. TWO’s ad comes one day after Jindal wrote a defiant, and grossly inaccurate, New York Times op-ed attacking corporate leaders. He called them cowards for supporting equality in similar high-profile “religious liberty” battles in Arizona, Arkansas, and Indiana. Jindal’s actions are clearly aimed at bolstering his standing among social conservatives – particularly in the Iowa caucuses – as he considers whether to run for president or position himself as a potential nominee for Vice President, TWO asserts in its ad: "Bobby Jindal is placing self-int...

This documentary covers over 300 years of history concerning the migration and development of modern day Cajuns. Our story starts in Poitou, France where persecution caused a group of French settlers to travel across the ocean to Nova Scotia, Canada. Here they established a new life for themselves and became known as the Acadians. Many years later as a result of English rule over the region, the Acadians were once again persecuted and forced to leave their homes and travel to many destinations. Several ended up in South Louisiana. Still known as Acadians, they thrived for many years in Louisiana until WWII. As a result of leaving the region to fight in the war, many for the first time met people outside of the Acadian community. The war galvanized the Acadians with Americanism. Now identi...

This is my very brief introduction to Louisiana history and culture with an emphasis on food and music. I run through a very brief overview of the colonization of Louisiana by European cultures and discuss how waves upon waves of cultural and ethnic diversity collided in and around New Orleans and how so much of that diversity stuck around and became part of the unique gumbo that is New Orleans and southern Louisianan culture. I focus on the parts of this culture that are the easiest entry points for folks from the outside: Mardi Gras, music, and food.

Mossville, Louisiana is an African-American community founded by freed slaves. Its residents suffer from health condtions, such as cancer, and mortality rates significantly higher than the U.S. national average due to disregard of human health and life by local oil refineries & chemical plants and the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) refusal to regulate airborne dioxin. In 2001, a division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found levels of the dioxin compound vinyl chloride in the air in Mossville at concentrations 100 times what is permitted by federal law, and ethylene dichloride at 20 times -- but the report from the U.S. health agency, ATSDR, concluded, "The source of dioxin exposures in the Mossville residents is not known."

The IHNC Lake Borgne Surge Barrier also called the Great Wall of Louisiana is a storm surge barrier constructed near the confluence of and across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet near New Orleans. The barrier runs generally north-south from a point just east of Michoud Canal on the north bank of the GIWW and just south of the existing Bayou Bienvenue flood control structure. Navigation gates where the barrier crosses the GIWW and Bayou Bienvenue reduce the risk of storm surge coming from Lake Borgne and/or the Gulf of Mexico. Another navigation gate (Seabrook Floodgate) has been constructed in the Seabrook vicinity where the IHNC meets Lake Pontchartrain to block a storm surge from entering the IHNC from the Lake.
The Louisiana State Penitentiary, Angola is one of the largest and most notorious maximum security prisons. Bordered on three sides by the Mississippi river "The Farm" has a particularly harsh reputation. It was once a 19th century plantation, and referred as "worst prison in America". Today "Alcatraz of the South" is home to some 5,000 inmates, most are serving life sentences and are expected to die on the penitentiary grounds and be buried in the prisoner's graveyard.

You can point your guns, and hope they'll stay
But they will fold their hands, and start to pray
A little faith can heal heart that's been betrayed
