China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.
One Man And His Pet Tortoise SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj We upload a new incredible video every weekday. Subscribe to our YouTube channel so you don't miss out: A CHILDLESS man has become a viral sensation after taking his enormous pet tortoise for a WALK. When Japanese funeral director Mitani Hisao, 62, spotted a five-centimetre baby tortoise in a pet shop in Tokyo, he knew the animal would become his best friend. But 19 years later the tortoise, named Bon-chan, has grown dramatically - his shell is now 2 foot 5 inches (75cm) in diameter. The unlikely pair attract attention wherever they go on their two hour outings around the city dressed in their homemade outfits. Remember Aesop's fable about the Hare and the Tortoise that have a race? It's taking place in real life. In central China's Wuhan city, an ocean park held a special race of the Hare and the Tortoise, but with a twist. Under the new rule, the slow-moving tortoise was not expected to challenge the hare again, but only has to compete against its own kind. Click the video to watch the race!

Shanghai - China Travel Guide, Tourism, Vacation World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube Shanghai - China Travel Guide http://goo.gl/Cl0qNG Shanghai is the future all other Chinese cities aspire to reach. Forget creaking temples and dusty old palaces (there are plenty of them elsewhere); Shanghai is where people come to see modern China at its glimmering best. This fast-paced city of towering skyscrapers is, in fact, not without its own significant history. Its glory days of the 1930s helped build Shanghai's reputation as a City of Sin. But to pause for too long at the city's past would be missing the point: Shanghai is all about the future face of the world's future super power, and coming here is to witness what makes the business end of China tick. Perhaps best visited at...
China Feisty tortoise fight - A bizarre video has emerged from China of two tortoises fighting. The footage, captured in Jining, Shandong Province on last week, shows the bigger tortoise repeatedly hitting the other one with its head, pushing it a few centimetres further each time.
We told our 1 year old, Julie, that the turtles were "keeping warm" ... What do you think they were doing? The sign above their enclosure reads: Russian Tortoise - China, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Russian Tortoises prefer desert like environment with sparse foliage. These tortoises are active only a few months a year, hibernating in winter and estivating in burrows during summer. They are herbivorous, grazing on a variety of weeds and grasses. Please subscribe! *** Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the sources for early Chinese history. The first attempts to make a record of historical events in China date from the Shang dynasty of the second millennium BC. The earliest surviving records were inscribed on bones or tortoise shells; in later centuries, chroniclers left detailed accounts on paper or silk. In the last hundred years, archaeologists have discovered a wealth of new materials, including a cache of previously unknown texts which were found in a sealed cave on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Such sources are are shedding new light on Chinese history, although interpreting ancient sources from the period before the invention of printing presents a number of challenges. *** GUESTS: Roel Sterckx Tim Barrett Hilde de Weerdt
