Everything you need to know about finding a Render Supplier

There are various meanings to the word render, but for the purposes of this article the type of render we are discussing is a type of finish used on walls, usually applied to outer walls, but also indoors as well.

Types of Wall Render

There are three main types of wall render available. Each one is done in specific ways and for different effects:

©Traditional Render

Cement Render

This made up of lime, sand and cement mixed with water.
  • The lime provides flexibility and therefore prevents cracking.
  • Coarse or fine sand is used depending on what sort of smoothness is required.
  • Cement can be coloured to create the desired effect
  • Water can be varied to give anything from a light coating or bagging effect to a full, smooth finish.

Acrylic Render

Plastic replaces the lime of the more traditional render. It has some advantages:
  • Acrylic render is easier to apply.
  • It also dries more easily
  • It can be applied with a roller instead of a full trowel

Solid Plastering

Consists of gypsum (or lime), fine sand and water. This type of plastering is more suitable for indoor use because:
  • Solid plastering has a softer finish which is easily damaged.
  • It is applied wet and takes a long time to dry, making it difficult to use outdoors because it can dry too quickly or be affected by rain, frost or other weather conditions.

Reasons to Render

A professional renderer can really transform your home to give it a completely different look. But there are reasons other than looks. Here are some good reasons to render:
  • A home built using dark bricks can be made more energy efficient with a layer of light coloured render over the bricks. This not only adds to the insulation of the home but also reflects the heat instead of absorbing it.
  • A dark brick with arches such as was common in the 1970’s can be very dark on the inside, so applying a render to the veranda, arches and outer walls will help lighten up the interior without having to install skylights or extra lighting.
  • Updating an older home with render instantly adds to the value because it will not require painting again and it will look more modern

Render is a valid way to improve a home and providing it is done by a competent person, it will last the life of the home. In some states your trade professional will need to be licensed to carry out any rendering work in your home. There is more information about the licensing of renderers where you live on Licensedtrades.com.au.
