3AW listener Ronnie was required to complete a course at work that he believes was useless.

He received a certificate called "Workstation Safety Plus".

The course contained modules such as "sitting comfortably" and "your desk area".

Tom Elliott wonders why some companies spend large amounts of money teaching employees how to sit properly.

But University of South Australia researcher Carol Kulik told Tom workplaces can be dangerous, even if they don't look it.

"If you're on a job like construction, you know to be careful," Ms Kulik said.

 "Those of us who have desk jobs, we don't realise how much damage we do to ourselves."

Ms Kulik said sitting too long with bad posture does real harm in the long run.
