"If you want to just make money, then you should go to the States, because you're not going to do that here," McKellar says. "What you do have that to compensate for that is control, and the possibility to work with likeminded people and create a vision together that is distinctive."
McKellar has certainly worked with some incredible people. As an actor, writer and/or director, he's collaborated with the likes of David Cronenberg, Sarah Polley, Bruce McDonald, Mina Chum, Atom Egoyan, Rachel McAdams, Gordon Pinsent, Sandra Oh and the late, great Tracy Wright (to whom he was married). This Sunday, July 20, HBO Canada is debuting the Canadian dramedy Sensitive Skin. Kim Cattrall stars in the series—marking her return to television since Sex and the City ended—as Davina, a woman of a certain age who is facing a personal crisis. Joanna Lumley had defined the role in the original BBC black comedy/drama of the same name, on which the new Canadian series is based.
Cattrall also serves as an executive producer, along with co-star Don McKellar, who directs all six episodes; Bob Martin, who wrote the entire series; and the original show’s creator, Hugo Blick. McKellar plays Davina’s long-time husband, Al. The couple looks to shake things up by getting rid of their comfortable family home and moving to an ultra-modern condo downtown, starting a new chapter in their lives.
Sensitive Skin is produced by Rhombus Media in association with Baby Cow Productions, The Movie Network and Movie Central. The series is distributed by Tricon Films & Television and produced in partnership with the Canada Media Fund and Rogers Cable Network Fund.

Don McKellar is a Canadian filmmaker, writer and actor, whose two directed features - Last Night (1998) and Childstar (2004) - exhibit a singular voice in Canadian film.
Don returned to the director's chair for The Grand Seduction - a remake of a popular Quebecois film about a small town trying to court a big city doctor - written by original scribe, Ken Scott, and Michael Dowse.
Sitting down with Don has been one of our goals from the start, so we were thrilled to conduct this interview at our studio space in OCAD U's Graduate Gallery before also hosting Don for a live commentary of Last Night. We go in-depth on all of his films, as well his thoughts on filmmaking in Toronto and in general.

Don McKellar
Don McKellar (born August 17, 1963) is a Canadian actor, writer, and filmmaker.
Personal life
McKellar was born in Toronto, Ontario to a lawyer father and teacher mother. He attended Glenview Senior Public School, Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute and later studied English at the University of Toronto's Victoria College. After beginning his career in the theatre, McKellar was lured into the realm of Canadian cinema, where he has since become a ubiquitous presence.
McKellar married his longtime partner, Canadian actress Tracy Wright, on January 3, 2010. Wright died from cancer on June 22, 2010.
Career
McKellar was a founding member of Toronto's Augusta Company, along with his future wife Tracy Wright and Daniel Brooks.
McKellar made his first screen appearance in 1989 in Bruce McDonald's film Roadkill, for which he also wrote the screenplay. McKellar's work on Roadkill earned him Genie Award nominations for best supporting actor and best screenwriter, attracting the attention of many in Canada. Roadkill also won the Toronto-Citytv Award for best Canadian feature.

This Sunday, July 20, HBO Canada is debuting the Canadian dramedy Sensitive Skin. Kim Cattrall stars in the series—marking her return to television since Sex and the City ended—as Davina, a woman of a certain age who is facing a personal crisis. Joanna Lumley had defined the role in the original BBC black comedy/drama of the same name, on which the new Canadian series is based. "If you want to just make money, then you should go to the States, because you're not going to do that here," McKellar says. "What you do have that to compensate for that is control, and the possibility to work with likeminded people and create a vision together that is distinctive."

Sandra Oh and Don McKellar are among the voices in Ann Marie Fleming’s
Window Horses (The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming), a playful
animated feature about Rosie Ming (Oh), a 20something closet poet who lives in
Vancouver with her overprotective Chinese grandparents. Rosie is invited to a
poetry festival in Shiraz, Iran, where she embarks on a whirlwind journey of
discovery – of history, herself and the Iranian father she thinks abandoned her.
The film has been a favorite on the festival circuit, winning VIFF’s Best
Canadian Film Award and making TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten list.
McKellar voices a German poet who perhaps hasn’t been around the block as
many times as he projects. Ellen Page is Rosie’s chatty friend; Kristen Thomson
is Rosie’s absent mother; Nancy Kwan and Eddy Ko are the grandparents
and Shohreh Aghdashloo is an Iranian Women’s Studies professor.
The film’s narrative is presented in one animation style, while the poems come
alive through the work of various artists. The film is produced (in co-production
with the NFB), written and directed by Vancouver’s Ann Marie Fleming, who
also performs her song “Window Horses.” Like Rosie, Fleming is of mixed race.
Sandra Oh (five-time Emmy nominee and 2006 Golden Globe winner for
her role on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy) serves as the film’s executive producer.

"If you want to just make money, then you should go to the States, because you're not going to do that here," McKellar says. "What you do have that to compensate for that is control, and the possibility to work with likeminded people and create a vision together that is distinctive."
McKellar has certainly worked with some incredible people. As an actor, writer and/or director, he's collaborated with the likes of David Cronenberg, Sarah Polley, Bruce McDonald, Mina Chum, Atom Egoyan, Rachel McAdams, Gordon Pinsent, Sandra Oh and the late, great Tracy Wright (to whom he was married). Collectively, they created so many visions that are absolutely distinct.

Don McKellar is a Canadian filmmaker, writer and actor, whose two directed features - Last Night (1998) and Childstar (2004) - exhibit a singular voice in Canadian film.
Don returned to the director's chair for The Grand Seduction - a remake of a popular Quebecois film about a small town trying to court a big city doctor - written by original scribe, Ken Scott, and Michael Dowse.
Sitting down with Don has been one of our goals from the start, so we were thrilled to conduct this interview at our studio space in OCAD U's Graduate Gallery before also hosting Don for a live commentary of Last Night. We go in-depth on all of his films, as well his thoughts on filmmaking in Toronto and in general.
