The Rideau River is an Eastern Ontario river which flows north from Upper Rideau Lake and empties into the Ottawa River at Rideau Falls in Ottawa, Ontario. Its length is 146 kilometres (91 mi). The river was given the French name "Rideau" (curtain) after the appearance of this waterfall. The Rideau River and The Rideau Canal are recommended Heritage Fair or Foir du Patrimoine Canadien projects ou projets.
The Rideau Canal, which allows travel from Ottawa to the city of Kingston, Ontario on Lake Ontario, was formed by joining the Rideau River with the Cataraqui River. The river diverges from the Canal at Hog's Back Falls in Ottawa.
In early spring, to reduce flooding on the lower section of the river, workers from the city of Ottawa use ice blasting to clear the ice which covers the river from Billings Bridge to Rideau Falls by cutting "keys" through the ice and using explosives to break off large sheets of ice. This practice has been going on for more than 100 years.
The regulatory authority charged with protecting the Rideau River and its tributaries is the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.

"This summer one of our undergraduate students, Millen, monitored the new culvert that connects Brewer Pond to the Rideau River for use by aquatic species. This culvert was installed in 2014 by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority as part of their pond restoration project to improve connectivity between the river and the pond and avoid the annual fish kills that were occurring due to low oxygen levels. Collecting hours of GoPro footage, Millen was able to capture several species including smallmouth bass, various sunfish, snapping and painted turtles, muskellunge, and beavers using the culvert and the habitat around it. Check out this video for some of the highlights captured over the summer! This restoration project was made possible by City of Ottawa, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, On...
Each spring we undertake ice breaking and clearing operations along the Rideau River. This tradition goes back to the late 19th century when ice damming conditions in the area caused backups, putting nearby buildings at risk of water damage with the arrival of spring and the rising of the river flow. We met with the flood control program crew to learn about each step for this year's ice breaking operations. For more from ottcity online visit the magazine here: http://ottawa.ca/en/ott-city-online

Every year since the late 1800s, the City of Ottawa, in partnership with the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, undertakes ice breaking and clearing operations along the Rideau River. This allows water to flow unrestricted and alleviates possible spring flooding in flood-prone areas. Starting above Rideau Falls, saws are used to cut keys to remove large pieces of ice along portions of the river. In normal operations, explosive charges are then set on either side of the keys which blasts full sheets of ice down through the dam. But with this year’s warmer winter weather, blasting was cancelled. Amphibious excavating equipment is then used in various spots along the river to break ice apart to create open water. Ice breaking operations continue daily until the river's flow is stabili...

We love this park. Every year we catch a bass right off the dock and eat it. We thought we saw a crane but Sing-Yee informed us it is an egret.

They utilize the system, the power of control
Got you all their mercy, obey as you've been told
White collars doing justice? Criticizing you
Tearing at your freedom,
There's nothing you can do
Prisoned in the social dungeon,
caged within their laws
Dispersing off their selfishness,
they toss you to the dogs
Blind to all subconsious cries,
too deaf to even care
Struggle for your blemished rights,
then slapped into the chair
Incubating haired, hatching such a greed
Vending all their lying truth,
just to suit their need
Syndicated governments, ceasing all demise
Spawning off their ignorance,
