Claude Jutra (French pronunciation: [klod ʒytʁa]; March 11, 1930 - November 5, 1986) was a Canadian actor, film director and writer.
The Prix Jutra, and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television's Claude Jutra Award, are named in his honor because of his importance in Quebec cinema history.
Claude Jutra was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec and studied to be a doctor before turning to his first love, the cinema. In 1954 he went to work at the National Film Board of Canada where he trained in all facets of filmmaking. In 1958 he went to France to work with François Truffaut and Jean Rouch.
With financing and production provided by the National Film Board of Canada, Jutra co-wrote and directed the acclaimed 1971 film Mon oncle Antoine as well as directing several cinema verite shorts such as Wrestling and The Devil's Toy. He also co-directed with Norman McLaren and starred in the pixilation short A Chairy Tale.
In 1984, he was awarded the Prix Albert-Tessier, given to individuals for an outstanding career in Québec cinema.
The Screen Awards, (previously named Star Screen Awards), is an annual awards ceremony held in India honoring professional excellence in the Bollywood Film Industry. The nomination and award selection is done by a panel of distinguished professionals from the industry.
The Screen Awards, initiated by the chairman of The Express Group, Mr. Viveck Goenka in 1994, is focused on excellence in films in India. The awards attempts to position themselves as India's first awards that are given by the film fraternity to the film fraternity by way of a jury, as opposed to the other "popular" awards. The awards are also the first to be conducted every year.
The Awards for Hindi and Marathi films, TV and non-film music are presented annually at a glittering function in January each year. Several editions of the awards such as the "Screen Weekly Awards", "Screen Videocon Awards", "Star Screen Awards", "Colors Screen Awards" and "Life OK Screen Awards" have thus far been presented. Until 2001, the awards were sponsored by Videocon International and hence known as the Screen Videocon Awards. For the regional cinema of South India, Screen has held three editions of the "Screen Awards for excellence in South Indian Cinema". The awards were presented for Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema.
The Canadian Screen Awards (French: Les prix Écrans canadiens) are awards given annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television recognizing excellence in Canadian film, English-language television, and digital media productions.
The new awards were first presented in 2013 as the result of a merger of the Gemini Awards and Genie Awards—the Canadian Academy's previous awards presentations for Canadian television and film productions.
They are widely considered to be the most prestigious award for Canadian entertainers and filmmakers, often referred to as the Canadian equivalent of the "Oscars."
In April 2012, the Canadian Academy announced that it would merge the Gemini Awards and the Genie Awards into a new awards show that would better recognize Canadian accomplishments in film, television, and digital media. On September 4, 2012, the Canadian Academy announced that the new ceremony would be known as the Canadian Screen Awards, reflecting the multi-platform nature of the presentation's expanded scope and how Canadians consume media content. The inaugural ceremony, hosted by comedian Martin Short and broadcast by CBC Television, was on March 3, 2013.
Genie Awards were given out to recognize the best of Canadian cinema by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. From 1949–1979, the awards were named the Canadian Film Awards (they were also known as the "Etrog Awards," for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed the statuette). In 1980 they were renamed The Genie Awards.
Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the Genie Rules and Regulations booklet which is distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, meet to screen the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then vote on these nominations.
In 2012, the Academy announced that the Genies would merge with its sister presentation for English-language television, the Gemini Awards, to form a new award presentation known as the Canadian Screen Awards.
The Genie Awards were originally aired by CBC from 1979 to 2003, before moving to CHUM Limited's networks (Citytv, Bravo! and Star!). After CTVglobemedia purchased CHUM Limited, the Genie Awards moved to Canwest Global's E and IFC for 2008. The last two Genie Awards (2011-2012) were broadcast by the CBC.
The Jutra Award (Prix Jutra or La Soirée des Jutra) is a Canadian annual cinema award that recognizes talent and achievement in the mainly francophone feature film industry in Quebec. Introduced in 1999, the Jutra Award is named after the film-maker Claude Jutra and awarded for performance, writing and technical categories such as best actor, actress, director, screenplay, et cetera. It should not be confused with the Claude Jutra Award, a special award presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television as part of the separate Canadian Screen Awards program. The Jutra trophy was designed by sculptor Charles Daudelin. The Prix Jutra replaced the prix Guy-L'Écuyer created in 1987 by Les Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois in memory of actor Guy L'Écuyer.

This groovy psychedelic clip is an excerpt from a 1970 French-Canadian film "Wow" (not 'Ouaoh!'), by Claude Jutra, soon after to direct "Mon Oncle Antoine". "Le reve de Monique" is one segment from a collection of young quebecois people acting out their dreams, desires, and preoccupations, typical of teenagers of the time elsewhere also. This clip features Monique Simard, the woman who would go on to become Canadian film producer, studio head, and current head of the French-language arm of the National Board of Canada, and also one-time representative for Parti Québécois, a social democratic party advocating Quebec nationalism with secession from Canada!

BLACKBIRD director JASON BUXTON received the Claude Jutra Award at this year's Canadian Screen Awards. Buxton sheds some light on independent film making, micro-budgets, and the obstacles that independent Canadian filmmakers face.
Claude Jutra's sweeping portrait of village life in 1940s Quebec has been called one of the greatest Canadian films of all time. Recalling a time when the local general store was the crossroads of life, the film illustrates the way a young boy sees the world and those closest to him – first through the eyes of a teenager, and later, as events change him, through the eyes of an adult. In French with English subtitles. Directed by Claude Jutra - 1971

In this episode of Lightbox Skwigly meets Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre, a Concordia University graduate who founded MJSTP Films in 2004 and has since built up an impressive, award-winning filmography including "Passages", "The Sapporo Project" and "McLaren’s Negatives" which picked up over twenty awards and took festivals by storm. Her recent film "Jutra" is an animated documentary exploring the life and work of "Mon Oncle Antoine" director and "A Chairy Tale" co-director (with Norman McLaren) Claude Jutra, executed through the painstaking assemblage of animation and archival footage of the filmmaker himself. Having been selected as part of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight last year, amongst its recent achievements is a Canadian Screen Awards win for Best Short Documentary. The film has also be...
The Canadian Screen Awards (French: Les prix Écrans canadiens) are awards given annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television recognizing excellence in Canadian film, English-language television, and digital media productions. The new awards were first presented in 2013 as the result of a merger of the Gemini Awards and Genie Awards—the Canadian Academy's previous awards presentation for Canadian television and film productions. Thanks for watching and enjoy the video!
