This is a revised version of the video I did a while back of Bobby Rydell's version of "Volare." I think it's better ... I hope it's a lot better. Singer and entertainer Bobby Rydell had it all in 1960 with the release of his famous rendition of "Volare," a splendidly catchy cover (yes, the term would be "cover" in this case) of the 1958 Domenico Modugno classic of the same name. Perhaps it was only by coincidence that at the same time the song was climbing the charts, famed Italian director Federico Fellini released La Dolce Vita (1960) into American theaters. In my mind the song and the film seem to complement one another, which is why some scenes from the great director's romantic comedy drama appear in this video. Bits of Americana from the period also appear in the video, including one jitterbug dance sequence from the 1956 film Rock, Rock, Rock! Rydell, of course, was an American idol, a heart throb teenage girls adored. The man had style, class, polish, sex appeal, charm, good taste ... you name it. Only one other person on the music scene had what he had, only he had it in spades ... and that was Bobby Darin. There is no question in my mind that Bobby Rydell was set to be Bobby Darin's successor. Unfortunately, he was one of the few real casualties of the British Invasion. Bobby was riding high on a song called "Forget Him" which was destined to be #1 with a bullet in 1964 ... and it DESERVED to be a #1 smash hit ... only to get sucker punched by The Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand." Never mind that Lesley Gore got equally routed with her song "You Don't Own Me" languishing at a perpetual #2 due to the four mop tops' Liverpool blitz of the US Hot 100. Gore's career continued with ups and downs throughout the 1960s, but Rydell pretty much faded from the music scene, opting for a career in television and some acting roles. Well, thank god for the 50's and early 60's revival that began in the 1970s with American Graffiti and that is now part of the broader "retro" genre. Mr. Rydell has been touring since the 1970s with Frankie Avalon and Fabian, as well as performing in Las Vegas. And in 1995 at last his recordings were re-released by K-Tel after three decades of being out of print. I was fortunate to come across the vinyl single of "Forget Him" in the 1970s when I managed to get hold of an older cousins' 45s and recorded it. "Wild One" and "Volare" I purchased at a garage sale. When I began working as DJ in 1978, I used to play these songs often during my oldies show on Sunday nights. Now these, and many other of his fine hits, are once again available to the public. So, here is a more "live" revised version of my previous music video of Bobby Rydell's "Volare." I did the best I could to sync his clips with the song, but some scenes will probably be better than others. Enjoy the illusion, in any event!

Henry William Thompson (September 3, 1925 -- November 6, 2007), known professionally as Hank Thompson, was an American country music entertainer whose career spanned seven decades. Thompson's musical style, characterized as honky tonk Western swing, was a mixture of fiddles, electric guitar and steel guitar that featured his distinctive, smooth baritone vocals. His backing band, The Brazos Valley Boys, was voted the top Country Western Band for 14 years in a row by Billboard. The primary difference between his music and that of Bob Wills was that Thompson, who used the swing beat and instrumentation to enhance his vocals, discouraged the intense instrumental soloing from his musicians that Wills encouraged; however, the "Hank Thompson sound" exceeded Bob Wills in Top 40 country hits. Although not as prominent on the top country charts in later decades, Thompson remained a recording artist and concert draw well into his 80s. The 1987 novel Crazy Heart by Thomas Cobb was inspired by Thompson's life, specifically by his practice of picking up a local band to back him when he toured. In 2009 Cobb's novel was turned into a successful film directed by Scott Cooper and starring Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges.
