A honey bee (or honeybee), in contrast with the stingless honey bee, is any bee that is a member of the genus Apis, primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests from wax. Honey bees are the only extant members of the tribe Apini, all in the genus Apis. Currently, only seven species of honey bee are recognized, with a total of 44 subspecies, though historically, from six to eleven species have been recognized. Honey bees represent only a small fraction of the roughly 20,000 known species of bees. Some other types of related bees produce and store honey, but only members of the genus Apis are true honey bees. The study of honey bees is known as melittology.
Honey bees appear to have their center of origin in South and Southeast Asia (including the Philippines), as all the extant species except Apis mellifera are native to that region. Notably, living representatives of the earliest lineages to diverge (Apis florea and Apis andreniformis) have their center of origin there.

Part 1 - In this video we prepare our bee hive for removal of the honey. The crown board must be placed below the supers with Porter Bee Escapes. These escapes allow the bees to leave the supers and enter the brood box, but not go back up into the supers. If these are successful the supers will be free of bees and can be taken away to harvest the honey. The hive has not been opened for over 2 years and we have a very active colony. The last time I opened up the hive the bees were very aggressive.
Sir David Attenborough visits Malaysia to take a closer look at the life of the world's largest honey bees. When one sting can lead to a thousand very quickly in a very defensive colony of killer bees, Sir David is quite keen to make a good impression!. Amazing video from BBC animal and wildlife show 'Life in the Undergrowth'.

We did this last year but weren't as well prepared. This year went much better and was much less painful. I'm claiming the world record for swarm or cluster captures. We ended up splitting some of these as we unloaded. Total ending count was 25 hives. Just for clarification these are clusters of misplaced bees and not actual swarms. There is NO queen in these clusters. Here is the link to the one we did last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJFFO9dDEmY
Bees are dying in their millions. It is an ecological crisis that threatens to bring global agriculture to a standstill. Introduced by Martha Kearney, this documentary explores the reasons behind the decline of bee colonies across the globe, investigating what might be at the root of this devastation. Honey bees are the number one insect pollinator on the planet, responsible for the production of over 90 crops. Apples, berries, cucumbers, nuts, cabbages and even cotton will struggle to be produced if bee colonies continue to decline at the current rate. Empty hives have been reported from as far afield as Taipei and Tennessee. In England, the matter has caused beekeepers to march on Parliament to call on the government to fund research into what they say is potentially a bigger threat to ...

To help promote his all-natural approach, 40 year beekeeper Jerry Dunbar participated in the creation of this video series demonstrating his practices and the life cycle of a healthy colony of bees. Natural Beekeeping follows his narrative, augmented with HD footage of seasonal and hive behavior. Dunbar also introduces products that can be made from the healthy substances found in the hive - including mead, honey straws, propolis tincture and edible lip balm. Natural Beekeeping is perfect for the classroom, library, or daycare center (kids are mesmerized by the honey bees)... and will broaden the horizons of anyone interested in ecological, health, and nutritional matters. Included: - Beekeeping Intro - Hive Tour - Swarm Removal - Bee Package Installation - Adding a Honey Super - Triangula...
THE RUSSELL SCOTT SHOW - Earth Dr Reese Halter is award-winning broadcaster and writer, distinguished biologist and sought after public speaker. Earth Dr Reese Halter's love of Nature began as a child. A springtime tree-planting ritual with his father and brother became his passion. He knew from the time he was a child that he wanted to be an Earth Doctor and has a PhD in eco-stress tree physiology from The University of Melbourne, Australia. It became clear at a young age to Earth Dr Reese that there was a tremendous lack of basic information on how trees and forests function. He believed that teams of interdisciplinary problem-solving scientists needed to work together to short-circuit ecological disasters, and identify and protect fragile ecosystems.

Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, known for their role in pollination and, in the case of the best-known bee species, the European honey bee, for producing honey and beeswax. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea, presently considered as a clade Anthophila. There are nearly 20,000 known species of bees in seven to nine recognized families,[1] though many are undescribed and the actual number is probably higher. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants.
