Animal welfare is the well-being of animals. The standards of "good" animal welfare vary considerably between different contexts. These standards are under constant review and are debated, created and revised by animal welfare groups, legislators and academics worldwide.Animal welfare science uses various measures, such as longevity, disease, immunosuppression, behavior, physiology, and reproduction, although there is debate about which of these indicators provide the best information.
Concern for animal welfare is often based on the belief that non-human animals are sentient and that consideration should be given to their well-being or suffering, especially when they are under the care of humans. These concerns can include how animals are slaughtered for food, how they are used in scientific research, how they are kept (as pets, in zoos, farms, circuses, etc.), and how human activities affect the welfare and survival of wild species.
Animal welfare was a concern of some ancient civilizations but began to take a larger place in Western public policy in 19th-century Great Britain. In the 21st century, it is a significant focus of interest in science, ethics, and animal welfare organizations.

Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director Ron Kagan will share a view of the future that includes a different relationship between human and non-human animals. Zoos will demonstrate a fundamental commitment to being "patient-centered” – ensuring a great quality of life for every single animal in a zoo. Not just aspirations and words but reality. He will explain the challenging responsibility involved with keeping living beings "captive" and the need to deliver on a decades-long promise to make captivity similar to (and possibly better than) the wild. Ron Kagan is the Executive Director and CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society. An advocate and activist for compassionate conservation and animal welfare, Ron is a leader in environmental and humane education. Over the past thirty years, ...
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Charmaine has been highly engaged with the veterinary community since her graduation from the University of Melbourne in 2004. Europeans care deeply about the ethical treatment of animals and have become world leaders in applying legislation on animal welfare. Although the EU Treaty recognises animals as sentient beings, animal welfare laws are meaningless without the commitment of farmers, veterinarians, transporters, public enforcement officers, retailers, researchers, educators and citizens. Ensuring the welfare of animal's from farm to fork is everyone's responsibility. The EU supports many innovative programmes for the improvement of animal care. In this lecture from our Animal Welfare Law (LW229) module Dr Darren Calley explore unnecessary animal suffering. Scientists from Scotland’s Rural College are hosting a virtual discussion on how best to care for our animals. The animal welfare experts will be online on Friday 2 October at 1pm and school classes can join them by using Google+ Hangout or through YouTube. The event has been organised to celebrate 50 years since a significant report on livestock welfare which highlighted the need for scientific methods of assessing animal welfare and called for better more consistent care. As the report is a foundation stone of modern day animal welfare research, the scientists will also discuss the journey from that publication to modern day animal welfare science and what lies in store in the years ahead. You can leave questions here, join us live, or tweet @SRUCResearch using the #Freedoms50 hashta...
Brains in bits - Electrodes attached
Crowded in pens - For eggs to hatch
Rabbits don't cry - Mice don't fight
Join the animals - In their plight
The answer is simple
No we're not cripples
You should care
If you fucking dare
The liberators - Got good intentions
But not through violence - Just break their sentence
Peaceful means - Should be used
To show disgust - At animals abused
Free the creatures
God's so called preachers
Let them live
Is that much to give?
Fux fur coats - And seal skin jackets
Look better on animals - Than hanged old faggots
And guts - Death & pain
Needless killing - Cos they're so vain
Stop the culls
More smashed skulls
Just let them live
Or is that much to give
