10 -- Plitvice Lake: Croatia
This isn't the world of Avatar, but it is rather close. This lake is often called The Paradise Lake and with very good reason. This picturesque park has no less than 16 incredible blue-green water falls (that are above 20ft) flowing over the limestone and chalk lakes and pools. Some say it is the garden of Eden, I say it is not far of it!
9 - The Red Lake: Bolivia
Why are flamingos pink? Well we all know that it is due to the red brine shrimp they eat. But years ago people thought that it was because they has all stopped here at the Red Lake and bathed in its waters! The lake contains borax which is the white colour islands you see and the reddish colour of its waters are caused by red sediments and algae.
8 -- Peyto Lake: Canada
Peyto Lake is basically a melted glacier in the Banff National Park. During the summer months the amount of glacial rock water flowing into the lake doubles and these tiny microscopic rock particles give the lake a very bright turquoise color.
7 - Flathead Lake: USA.
What you are looking at in the image is not a camera trick, no "Photoshop" edit, and not a real flying boat! This is Flathead Lake in Montana, USA and the water is so transparent that the clarity of its waters is renowned! It is said that in the summer you can clearly see downwards in twenty feet of the water!
6 -- Hiller Lake, Western Australia
A bubble gum pink lake is strange enough, but unlike most other pink lakes in the World scientists have never been able to decisively prove why Hiller lake is pink! It is widely thought that the colour arises from a dye created by organisms "Dunaliella salina" and "Halobacteria" or maybe it is red halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts, or maybe it is just a trick of light, whatever the reason it it's amazing and nothing will take that away from it.
5 -- Carerra Lake, Chile
For over 6,000 years the waves off Carerra Lake have been hitting the calcium carbonate rock face and over time has created one of the smoothest caves in the World, with stunning swirling blue walls the cavern that the lake flows into is truly one of the most amazing things you will ever see.
4 - Shimshal Lake: Pakistan
While nothing special in both size and location, this amazing lake holds its own by being the World's only natural forming heart shape! Strangely it wasn't until 2005 when the road got opened up to Shimshal village that people other than locals knew about it!
3 - Gippsland Lake, Australia
In the day time Gippsland lake looks like pretty much any other lake in the World! But at night this 600 square kilometer lake system comes to life. What you are seeing in the image it a beautiful phenomenon caused by the presence of a microorganism called Noctiluca scintillans or as the locals call it "The Sparkle" .
2 - Lake Baikal: Russia
At just over 25 million years old this is widely considered to be the World's oldest lake. But it is not just the oldest! It is also one of the deepest and clearest lake in the World as well, and with well over 1700 animals and plant species it is also one of the most important.
1 - Five-Flower Lake: China
Five Flower Lake (Wǔhuā Hǎi) is the pride of Jiuzhaigou Valley. Colourful leaves are gathered in the lake front and because the water contains calcium carbonate as well as hydrophytes it makes it look like it's made up of several colours, but the most striking features is at the bottom of the lake that is covered with ancient trees that have fallen in and settled over time creating a strange black criss-cross effect.

The world's largest crude oil transporter has a secret buried deep in the Great Lakes—two aging oil pipelines that transport 23 million gallons of crude oil through the largest body of fresh water on earth.
Enbridge, the company that operates the pipelines, insists that the two 20-inch pipelines stretching across the Straits of Mackinac could last indefinitely. But one look at the company’s environmental record tells another story: Enbridge had more than 800 spills in North America between 1999 and 2010, dumping nearly 6.8 million gallons of oil. The largest spill released one million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River, only a few hours drive away from the Mackinac Straits. Activists and advocates have independently verified that parts of the pipeline—built in 1953—are sitting unsupported on the bottom of the lake and in major need of repair.
Motherboard travels to Michigan—oil spill central—to investigate the threats of crude oil being transported through one of the largest freshwater ecosystems in the world by a company with one of the most egregious environmental records.

Lake
A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lochs in Scotland and Ireland), and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are also larger and deeper than ponds, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers. In some parts of the world there are many lakes because of chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last Ice Age. All lakes are temporary over geologic time scales, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.
Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydro-electric power generation or domestic water supply, or for aesthetic or recreational purposes.

The world's largest crude oil transporter has a secret buried deep in the Great Lakes—two aging oil pipelines that transport 23 million gallons of crude oil through the largest body of fresh water on earth. 9 - The Red Lake: Bolivia
Why are flamingos pink? Well we all know that it is due to the red brine shrimp they eat. But years ago people thought that it was because they has all stopped here at the Red Lake and bathed in its waters! The lake contains borax which is the white colour islands you see and the reddish colour of its waters are caused by red sediments and algae.
8 -- Peyto Lake: Canada
Peyto Lake is basically a melted glacier in the Banff National Park. During the summer months the amount of glacial rock water flowing into the lake doubles and these tiny microscopic rock particles give the lake a very bright turquoise color.
7 - Flathead Lake: USA.
What you are looking at in the image is not a camera trick, no "Photoshop" edit, and not a real flying boat! This is Flathead Lake in Montana, USA and the water is so transparent that the clarity of its waters is renowned! It is said that in the summer you can clearly see downwards in twenty feet of the water!
6 -- Hiller Lake, Western Australia
A bubble gum pink lake is strange enough, but unlike most other pink lakes in the World scientists have never been able to decisively prove why Hiller lake is pink! It is widely thought that the colour arises from a dye created by organisms "Dunaliella salina" and "Halobacteria" or maybe it is red halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts, or maybe it is just a trick of light, whatever the reason it it's amazing and nothing will take that away from it.
5 -- Carerra Lake, Chile
For over 6,000 years the waves off Carerra Lake have been hitting the calcium carbonate rock face and over time has created one of the smoothest caves in the World, with stunning swirling blue walls the cavern that the lake flows into is truly one of the most amazing things you will ever see.
4 - Shimshal Lake: Pakistan
While nothing special in both size and location, this amazing lake holds its own by being the World's only natural forming heart shape! Strangely it wasn't until 2005 when the road got opened up to Shimshal village that people other than locals knew about it!

In the day time Gippsland lake looks like pretty much any other lake in the World! But at night this 600 square kilometer lake system comes to life. What you are seeing in the image it a beautiful phenomenon caused by the presence of a microorganism called Noctiluca scintillans or as the locals call it "The Sparkle" .

At just over 25 million years old this is widely considered to be the World's oldest lake. But it is not just the oldest! It is also one of the deepest and clearest lake in the World as well, and with well over 1700 animals and plant species it is also one of the most important.

Five Flower Lake (Wǔhuā Hǎi) is the pride of Jiuzhaigou Valley. Colourful leaves are gathered in the lake front and because the water contains calcium carbonate as well as hydrophytes it makes it look like it's made up of several colours, but the most striking features is at the bottom of the lake that is covered with ancient trees that have fallen in and settled over time creating a strange black criss-cross effect.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is located at the Whitefish Point Light Station 11 miles (18 km) north of Paradise in Chippewa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The light station property was transferred to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS), the Michigan Audubon Society (MAS), and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 1996. The three entities share governance of the site. The museum is operated by the GLSHS. The museum exhibits artifacts from shipwrecks from the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve and the bell from the wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald.[3][4] Admission to the museum includes a tour of historic buildings with displays that interpret the Great Lakes maritime, United States Coast Guard, and US Life-Saving Service history.

Lake freighters, or lakers, are bulk carrier vessels that ply the Great Lakes of North America. These vessels are traditionally called boats, although classified as ships.[1][2]
Lakers carry bulk cargoes of materials such as limestone, iron ore, grain, coal or salt from the mines and fields to the populous industrial areas down the lakes. The 63 commercial ports handled 173 million tons of cargo in 2006.[3] Because of winter ice on the lakes, the navigation season is not usually year-round. The Soo Locks and Welland Canal close from mid-January to late March, when most boats are laid up for maintenance. Crewmembers spend these months ashore.
Depending on their application, lakers may also be referred to by their type, such as oreboats (primarily for iron ore), straight deckers (no self-unloading gear), bulkers (carry bulk cargo), sternenders (all cabins aft), self unloaders (with self unloading gear), longboats (due to their slender appearance), or lakeboats, among others.
In the mid-20th century, 300 lakers worked the Lakes, but by the early 21st century there were fewer than 140 active lakers.[4] One of the best known was SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in 1975, the most recent and largest major vessel to be wrecked on the Lakes.The Great Lakes are today used as a major water transport corridor for bulk goods. The Great Lakes Waterway connects all the lakes; the smaller Saint Lawrence Seaway connects the lakes to the Atlantic oceans. Some lake freighters are too large to use the Seaway, and only operate on the Waterway and lakes.
In 2002, 162 million net tons of dry bulk cargo were moved on the Lakes. This was, in order of volume: iron ore, grain and potash. The iron ore and much of the stone and coal are used in the steel industry. There is also some shipping of liquid and containerized cargo but most container ships cannot pass the locks on the Saint Lawrence Seaway because the ships are too wide. The total amount of shipping on the lakes has been on a downward trend for several years.

There are hundreds of ground-based, sea-based and air-based radios constantly monitoring emergency frequencies for any sign of trouble.Aware of the curious incidents over the Great Lakes, the Federal Aviation Administration several years ago instituted a special "Lake Reporting Service;" pilots on Great Lakes overflights make continuous reports to ground stations. A 10-minute delay in such a report automatically launches a search-and-rescue operation. This service has saved many lives that would have been lost to ordinary accidents, but the high incidence of inexplicable disasters has remained unaffected.

Color 16mm film reel containing the documentary "Great Lakes Adventure," produced by Detroit Public Schools and the Ford Motor Company. The film chronicles a trip aboard the Ford Motor Company freighter as it voyages from the River Rouge Factory Complex to Duluth, Minnesota and back with a load of iron ore. A narrator provides a voice over throughout the film.
The film begins with a title sequence showing the ship's equipment and inner workings. Afterward the film introduces the job titles of the crew--the captain, first mate, second mate, third mate, helmsmen, watchman, deck hands, engineers, oilers and wipers, and galley staff.
The story of the freighter's trip begins with cranes being used to unload iron ore from the FORD at the Rouge Docks. The freighter departs, using its bow thruster, into the Rouge River, where it beneath the West Jefferson Avenue–Rouge River Bridge and past the foreign cement carrier JADRO and Gartland Steamship Company freighter NICOLET.
In the Detroit River, the FORD Receives mail from the U.S. Mail boat J.W. WESTCOTT II beneath the Ambassador Bridge. The camera also captures a pan along the Windsor riverfront.
The film then discusses maintenance work which is performed by the ship's crew. The sailors are shown cleaning the deck, changing bulbs, and repainting hatch covers.
The film then captures the procedures for the freighter to pass through the Soo Locks' MacArthur Lock, including a crew member swinging ashore to secure the mooring ties.
In the next segment, meal preparation, and meal time, and a life boat drill are shown. The freighter is then shown arriving in Duluth, Minnesota, where it load at the ore docks. Afterward, the narrator describes the shifts of the crew members, and they are shown working at night or relaxing. The film ends with the freighter passing beneath the Blue Water Bridge, and arriving in Detroit at night.
The film is on a metal 12" Tayloreel Corporation reel within a grey metal canister, which in turn in inside of an olive film reel shipping carton. The carton has a shipping label from One to One of Detroit, Michigan addressed to Corporate Identity at Ford Motor Company. Handwritten notes on the label add, "Ford Film" and "Dossin Museum Copy." The box is postmarked June 27, 1969. "18089" is handwritten on the side of the carton.
