Tools you’ll need:
- White cardboard (slightly thicker than poster cardboard is best)
- Watercolour paints in blues/aquas/lavenders/grey
- A jar of water
- Paintbrush
- Blue glitter
- String
- Scissors
- Also required: hot glue gun, other glue, snowflake template
Painted snowflake:
This simple layered snowflake can be kept plain or dressed up with paint and glitter – definitely one for those little ones who love craft.
Step 1: Divide your cardboard in two and let your child use the selected colours to paint all over it. Water colours are easy to use and clean up and blend beautifully, creating soft pretty colour washes. Leave to dry.
Step 2: Download the snowflake templates and cut out on the inside of the line. Trace around the templates – #1 on the painted cardboard; #2 and #3 on the white. Cut on the inside of the line, so no marks are present.
Step 3: Using your cut out of #2, cover in glue and sprinkle glitter over the top. Do this over a plate or piece of paper so you can reuse the excess glitter.
Step 4: Using your hot glue gun, stick #2 into the centre of #1. Match it so the spikes of #2 sit inside the gap created by each snowflake “prong” of #1. Stick #3 in the centre of #2, aligning the points of the snowflake with the points of snowflake #1.
Step 5: Punch a hole in the top of one of the snowflake tips – use a scalpel to slit a small hole, then push through a bamboo skewer to create the right-size hole. Tie some string to the hole and hang.
3D snowflake:
Two snowflakes melded together to create a cool 3D version hanging on your tree.
Step 1: Cut out templates #1 and #3 (on the inside of the lines so no marks are present. Trace around onto white cardboard. Cut out two lots of #1 template and four of #3.
Step 2: Cover all the #3 snowflakes with glue and sprinkle with glitter. Do this over a piece of paper or plate so you can reuse the glitter.
Step 3: Glue #3 onto the centre of #1 with a hot glue gun. Repeat on the other side of #1 so it’s like a snowflake sandwich! Repeat with the second lot so you have two “snowflake sandwiches”!
Step 4: Use scissors to cut through each of the two snowflakes to the centre.
Step 5: Slide the two slits together to create a 3D snowflake! Hang on your tree.
