Make a pasta box television

Penny Flanagan

Want to get your kids off screens? Get them involved in making this cardboard box television. They can put their own drawings on the screen and scroll through them when it’s finished.

You will need

  • 1 x cracker or pasta box
  • 2 x cardboard tubes (e.g. from a cling wrap roll)
  • 1 x clear plastic food lid (from a cherry tomato or herb pack)
  • construction paper
  • white paper
  • coloured pens
  • 2-4 rubber bands
  • glue
  • tape
  • craft knife

Activity

Carefully flatten out the box - you will need to reconstruct it later.

Using the end of a tube for a template, trace around it to mark four circles, two in each narrow side of the box.

In the part that will be the front of the TV, mark and cut a square for the screen. It should measure about 12cm x 8cm depending on the size of your box.

Now trim down the clear plastic lid so that it’s just bigger than the screen window. Tape it in place on the inside of the box.

Place the rubber bands around the centre of one of the tubes. This tube will be the one at the top of the TV.  The rubber bands will provide traction for the picture strip to grip onto.

Thread both cardboard tubes through the holes you cut earlier. Don’t close up the back of the box yet.

Now cut a strip of white paper for the picture roll: its width should  fit the width of the screen window and its length should be enough to wrap around both tubes snugly.

Mark five or six squares in a row along the strip of paper. Get your child to draw a different picture in each square.

Wrap the picture strip around the two cardboard tubes inside the television. Tape or glue the box closed.

Turn the top tube, it should turn the pictures through the window screen.

What’s on the tube?
