Lautém (Tetum: Lautein) is one of the districts of East Timor, on the eastern end of the island of Timor. It has a population of 64,135 (census 2010) and an area of 1,813 km2. Its capital is Lospalos, which lies 248 km east of the national capital, Dili. The subdistricts are Iliomar, Lautém, Lospalos, Luro, and Tutuala.
To the west the district borders the districts of Baucau and Viqueque. To the north lies the Banda Sea, and to the south the Timor Sea. The district also includes the easternmost point of the island, Kap Cutcha in the subdistrict of Tutuala, and the small island Jaco.
The district of Lautém is identical to what was the council of the same name in Portuguese Timor. At that time, many of the localities had Portuguese names, such as Vila Nova de Malaca (today Lautém), Nova Nazaré (Com), Nova Sagres (Tutuala) and Nova Âncora (Laivai).
Lautém has beautiful sand beaches and a wild, mountainous, and raw rugged unspoilt landscape. Many of the endemic birds of East Timor live here. Near the city of Lautém there are cave drawings. Numerous stone sarcophagi and animistic shrines are found throughout the district.

East Timor (i/ˌiːst ˈtiːmɔːr/) or Timor-Leste (/tiˈmɔːr ˈlɛʃteɪ/), Tetum: Timór Lorosa'e, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste, Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a sovereign state in Maritime Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The country's size is about 15,410 km2 (5,400 sq mi).
East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by Indonesia and was declared Indonesia's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially FRETILIN) and the Indonesian military.
Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor, on the eastern part, and Indonesia, on the western part. The Indonesian part, also known as West Timor, constitutes part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Within West Timor lies an exclave of East Timor called Oecusse District. The island covers an area of 30,777 square kilometres. The name is a variant of timur, Malay for "east"; it is so called because it lies at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Anthropologists identify eleven distinct ethno-linguistic groups in Timor. The largest are the Atoni of western Timor, and the Tetum of central and eastern Timor. Most indigenous Timorese languages belong to the Timor–Babar branch of the Austronesian languages spoken throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The non-Austronesian languages are thought to be related to languages spoken on Halmahera and in Western New Guinea. Some are so mixed it is difficult to tell which family they descend from.
I happened to visit this spectacular area at the beginning of rainy season, when the lake was out of water after dry season. I hence failed to reach the open water which was far from the banks and hard to reach because of much mud around preventing me from advancing further. The lake is famous as the major habitat of crocodiles in Timor Leste. I am really eager to come back here after the rainy season when there's plenty of water and to see the crocs.
The inaugural Lautem Cultural Festival in Lospalos, Timor-Leste held over the weekend of 5-7 April, was a great success. The festival theme for 2013 was Protecting Our Endangered Cultural Heritage. Hundreds of performers from the five sub-districts and three language groups of the Lautem district shared their cultures with each other and visitors from near and far. Endangered forms of cultural practice, such as vaihoho singing, shared mainstage with newer ideas, such as the Funny Fashion Parade that had the audience in stitches. Audience members observed demonstrations of soap-making, traditional cooking and storytelling, as well as traditional and modern music and dance. The Festival Fair featured cultural products, food and drinks for locals and tourists alike. An estimated 4000 people...
So I visited Jaco island Island at the end of my South Coast tour and decided to spend a night in Pousada de Tutuala. It's location is simply unmatched - on the top of a hill with breathtaking views of the rain forests descending gracefully to the deep blue sea. I watched the sunset and met the sunrise there and it was something unreal. But the best thing was that I was the only customer at the hotel that night and the staff left me completely alone at night. It was an interesting and a bit scary experience. The wind was whistling though my windows all night long and my sleep was quite wary. Actually I was pretty relieved to see the first rays of a new day in the morning.
Developing a tool for the teaching of literacy in Fataluku, one of the principle languages of Lautem district, Timor-Leste. Teachers and Teacher Assistants from Muapitine and Maina I pre-primary and primary schools participated in this workshop organised by the Timor-Leste National Commission for UNESCO on 29 August 2012. It's recommended to all domestic and international tourists to visit this stunning island. Jaco lies just off the eastern end of the island of Timor, part of the Tutuala subdistrict in Lautém District, and is separated from the mainland in front of Valu Beach by a 700-metre-wide (2,300-foot) channel navigable by small vessels. It is low lying, with an area of 11 square kilometres (4.2 square miles) and a maximum elevation of about 100 metres (330 feet). It is covered mainly by tropical dry forest, fringed by strand vegetation and sandy beaches. There are some low cliffs on the southern coast.

This is a great spot which is very close (30 min) from the capital Dili. You just follow the Comoro river towards the mountain and the waterfalls are on you left straight by the road, This trip happened in the rainy season when the mountain road is at its worst. It might be challenging to reach the waterfalls then, but it's truly rewarding, because there aren't so many people as in the hot season and there's plenty of water.

It's around 40 min driving from dili. This site is good not just for swimming, but also for hiking and snorkelling and picnics. The infrastructure has been redeveloped and is kinda new although I for one don't fancy the style of the new concrete double-deckers. The old bamboo huts were cozier and more authentic.
Wow it was a real adventure. The least populated and the most infested with crocs South Coast of Timor Leste boasts the worst roads in the country, best people and most secluded areas without a single person nearby. I was warned that if my bike gets broken there's no chance to get out of the south coast, but it's not quite true. Although the traffic is really very scarce in comparison with North Coast (Baucau, Liquica, Dili), there are trucks passing once in a while. And there are villages on the way. I had a flat tire once and managed to find a new one and people with instruments who changed it for me. The biggest challenge in the districts is food. There are very few places where you can have good hot freshly cooked food. Your only option might often be instant noodles PopMie.

“Iralalaru HPP” is a Bouvet Media documentary on a planned hydroelectric power plant in Lautem, East Timor (Timor-Leste). It shows principles for hydropower generation. Tetum with English subtext. This project planned a hydropower plant that may produce cheap and reliable electricity for Timor-Leste for 100 years. It has a capacity to produce a maximum of 28 MW (million watts), or a total of 189 GWh (billion watt-hours) per year, to the low cost of 0.07 US dollars per kWh. This has the potential to save 50 million US dollars per year as compared to using diesel based generators, using a clean and renewable energy source. “Iralalaru HPP” was filmed 2007–08. It was directed, filmed and edited by Basil Rolandsen for HydroTimor. A Bouvet Media Production.

Fretilin is the largest plitical party in Timor-Leste. It was formed in 1974 and during the Indonsian invasion and occupation, Fretilin spearheaded the East Timorese resistance. After the referendum in 1999 which the East Timorese voted overwhelmingly to break away from Indonesia, an election was held in 2001 for a Constituent Assembly. During the election Fretilin won nearly 70% of the total seats in the assembly. May other seats went to smaller break away Fretilin parties which formed after 1999. The Constuent Assembly was transformed in to the National Parliament and Fretilin formed a government of national inclusion. Early this year a political military crisis took place in Dili resulting in the forced resignation of Timor-Leste's prime minister, Marii Alkatiri, who is also th...

As promised to my dear facilitators and delegates.. more videos! A brief description of Initiative for Peace is in my previous video, which summarises the week of the conference (that is, if you were not involved with Initiative for Peace and would like to know more about it and what we do). This video is a compilation of the performances on Cultural Night but I do apologise as I had to cut most of the videos to shorten this compilation, not that the length of it is short now... However, with all that it is (it is not much, really), I really hope that you all enjoy it! I loved all the performances from that night and I also enjoyed performing for everyone, it was most definitely a very memorable night! Thank you to all involved for making it so special.
