An internationally popular telenovela made over for the American audience, Ugly Betty defies categorization. She’s just fuller figured than the twig-lets who strut through Mode magazine’s ultra-trendy offices, and her orthodontic braces, nerdy glasses and a garish outfit or two sometimes catch co-workers off guard. Hired to assist a womanizing editor to whom she presumably won’t pose a temptation, the smart, ethical Betty proves to be his best ally in a den of pretty, poisonous vipers. Her warm, unglamorous home life with her father, sister and ambiguously gay nephew adds rich texture to the series. At work and at home the ensemble cast is as nimble as the writing, which can move from drama to low comedy to high camp within a single scene. For demonstrating that wit and humanity never go out of style, Ugly Betty receives a Peabody Award.

Eric Mabius
Eric Harry Timothy Mabius (born April 22, 1971) is an American actor, known for his work as Daniel Meade on the ABC comedy-drama series Ugly Betty. He also worked on the Showtime series The L Word and in the films Cruel Intentions, The Crow: Salvation, and Resident Evil.
Life and career
Personal life
Mabius was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Elizabeth (née Dziczek) and Craig Mabius. His father worked as a historian preserving the Historic Allaire Village. He has a brother, Craig. Mabius is Roman Catholic. His mother is of Polish descent, while his father has Austrian and Irish ancestry. After attending Amherst Regional High School, in Amherst, Massachusetts, where he was voted "Most Dramatic Boy" as a senior, he enrolled in Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where he pursued studies in film.
Mabius wed Ivy Sherman in January 2006; the two first met in high school during a health education class. They have two sons: Maxfield Elliot was born on June 24, 2006 and Rylan Jaxson was born on December 7, 2008.

Tony Plana
Tony Plana (born April 19, 1952) is a Cuban American actor and director. He is well known for playing Betty Suarez's father, Ignacio Suarez, on the ABC show Ugly Betty and also for voicing Manuel "Manny" Calavera in the video game Grim Fandango.
Personal life
Plana was born in Havana. His family moved to Miami in 1960. He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University and was trained in acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, UK.
Career
While he is known to a broad audience for his roles in feature films and television, Plana is also known for his skills in acting and directing for the stage. He has created and directed a number of productions of the works of Shakespeare for minority audiences and he has been active in both the Los Angeles, Washington, DC and New York City theater communities, including leading appearances on Broadway and at New York City's Public Theater. He originated the role of Rudy in the L.A. production of the Luis Valdez play Zoot Suit, going on to play Rudy in the film version as well.

Ugly Betty
Ugly Betty is an American comedy-drama television series developed by Silvio Horta, which premiered on ABC on September 28, 2006, and ended on April 14, 2010. It revolves around the character Betty Suarez who, despite her lack of style, lands a job at a prestigious fashion magazine. The series is based on Fernando Gaitán's Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea, which has had many other international adaptations. It was produced by Silent H, Ventanarosa, and Reveille Productions partnered with ABC Studios and executive produced by Salma Hayek, Silvio Horta, Ben Silverman, Jose Tamez, and Joel Fields. The pilot was filmed in New York; seasons one and two were filmed in Los Angeles and seasons three and four in New York City.
During its first three seasons, it aired on Thursday nights, where it was mostly successful. However, viewership dropped significantly in the show's third season, particularly in the important 18–49 age group. In October 2009, the series was moved to Fridays, where it had trouble finding an audience. The backlash from its fans prompted ABC to move the show to Wednesdays at 10:00 pm Eastern/9:00 pm Central starting January 6, 2010, where it was thought that it would better complement its Wednesday hits Modern Family and Cougar Town, but on January 27, 2010, ABC announced it was canceling the series due to low ratings. Since the show's cancellation, it has gained a cult following. With the end of the series, there was talk of a push by Ana Ortiz and America Ferrera for an Ugly Betty movie.

America Ferrera
America Georgine Ferrera (born April 18, 1984) is an American actress. She is known for her leading role as Betty Suarez on the American Broadcasting Company's comedy-drama television series Ugly Betty (2006–10). Her acting garnered critical acclaim, and she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
She has featured in a number of films, including Real Women Have Curves (2002), The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005) and its sequel The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (2008), The Dry Land (2010), Our Family Wedding (2010), and End of Watch (2012). She also had a small role in the skateboard biopic Lords of Dogtown (2005). In addition, Ferrera provides the voice of Astrid the Viking in the DreamWorks animated picture How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Cartoon Network's television series based on the film Dragons: Riders of Berk, Dragons: Defenders of Berk and the sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014). In 2015, Ferrera marked her return to television as a regular and co-producer on the NBC situation comedy Superstore.

Betty Suarez is smart, sweet and hard working. The only problem is that she's not thin and beautiful like all her coworkers at Mode, the high-fashion magazine where she works. The only reason the publisher hired her to be his son's secretary, is that he thought Betty was someone who Daniel would never sleep with. Betty's hard work and determination earns Daniel's respect, as she helps him find his way through the shark infested waters of the fashion industry. Ugly Betty is based on a Colombian telenovela "Yo Soy Betty La Fea".
