Dazz

"Dazz" is a hit song by R&B/funk band Brick. "Dazz" is a combination of disco, funk and jazz. Released in 1976 from their Good High album, it would become their biggest hit, spending four weeks at the top of the R&B singles chart and reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. This song has been heavily sampled by hip-hop artists including MC Lyte in her "Cold Rock A Party" single, Ice Cube's "No Vaseline", Dana Dane "Cinderfella Dana Dane" (1987) and Snoop Dogg in his song "Snoopafella" (1999).

The Dazz Band is an American funk music band whose popularity exploded in the early 1980s. Emerging from Cleveland, Ohio, the group's biggest hit songs include the Grammy Award-winning "Let It Whip" (1982), "Joystick" (1983), and "Let It All Blow" (1984). The name of the band is a portmanteau of the description "danceable jazz".

History

The Dazz Band grew out of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1976 stemming from the jazz fusion band Bell Telefunk. Founded by Bobby Harris, The Dazz Band has performed since 1976 and continues to perform in 2015. Original Kinsman Dazz/ Dazz Band members included Bobby Harris, (saxophonist, vocalist) Kenny Pettus, (lead vocalist, percussions) Isaac "Ike" Wiley, Jr., (drums) his brother Michael Wiley (bassist), and Michael Calhoun (guitarist) . The group was originally named Kinsman Dazz at the suggestion of Ray Calabrese, who would later become the band's manager along with Sonny Jones, owner of The Kinsman Grill, located near the street Bobby Harris grew up on, and where the band worked as a house band. The Dazz Band adopted its name prior to the release of the song "Dazz" which became an R&B hit for Atlanta's Brick in 1976 as the groups Founder/ Leader Jimmy Brown confirms.

Let It Whip

"Let It Whip" is a 1982 hit single by the Dazz Band and their biggest hit, peaking at number one on the R&B chart for five non-consecutive weeks. The single also reached number two on the Dance chart and number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1983.

Co-written by producers Reggie Andrews and Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, performed by the Dazz Band, "Let It Whip" features a percolating drum machine rhythm underneath live drums, and a Minimoog bassline, underneath an electric bass guitar.

This song has been featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, in the video game Scarface: The World Is Yours, in commercials for Tampax and Reese's Whipps candy, and the skateboard film DVS skate more; and it has been covered by Boyz II Men and by pop rock band SR-71 on the soundtrack to The New Guy. This is also covered by George Lam, a singer from Hong Kong, as the Cantonese song titled "愛到發燒". CDB also covered it on their 1997 album Lifted. The song was also covered by fictional a cappella group The Treblemakers in the 2012 movie Pitch Perfect and is featured on the movie's soundtrack.

Brick

A brick is building material used to make walls, pavements and other elements in masonry construction. Traditionally, the term brick referred to unit composed of clay, but it is now used to denote any rectangular units laid in mortar. A brick can be composed of clay-bearing soil, sand and lime, or concrete materials.
