Question

I have been told the rear main seal requires replacement on my 4WD ute due to a leak. The car has 100,000 kilometres on the clock and it is fitted with an automatic transmission.

Given the labour is high to remove the transmission, what else should I consider looking to replace at the same time?

Thanks, Jarred.

Answer

While the transmission is out, it's probably worth changing the external seals on the transmission and transfer case where the tail shaft and drive shafts enter. Depending on what make and model your vehicle is, it would be best to check the tail shaft universal joints, cup links, centre bearing and transmission mounts while they are removed.

If it was a manual gearbox you would replace the clutch too considering its mileage. Other than that there isn't really anything in that area to worry about. The mechanic doing the job should advise you if anything else requires attention.
