Google Street View has landed on Rottnest Island!

Users of Google Maps can now experience ground-level 360 degree panoramas for almost all accessible areas of the island.

A unique feature of this imagery is RIA staff went off-road to capture the islands stunning beaches, salt lakes, lookouts and sections of the new Wadjemup Bidi walk trail. This was achieved through a loan of a Google Trekker, Street View Trekker, a wearable camera system in the form of a backpack which travelled over 140km on Rottnest Island while capturing images, allowing viewers to see all the island has to offer.

As a proud supporter of Telethon, Rottnest Island Authority and Fat Cat hosted an exclusive launch of this product at Princess Margaret Hospital to help the Telethon Kids experience the unique flora and fauna of the island without needing to step foot there! This was demonstrated in a novel way using Google Cardboard. These fun and simple viewers provide a virtual reality experience of Street View using a standard smart phone. The imagery was then officially launched to the public at the 2016 Rottnest Island Carnivale.

Below is a sample of the imagery from the island’s rugged West End, but anyone can fire up Google Maps in their browser and drop the yellow “Pegman” wherever they wish. Watch out for cameos by the island’s abundant wildlife!
