Aretha Louise Franklin (born March 25, 1942) is an American singer and musician. Franklin began her career singing gospel at her father, minister C. L. Franklin's church as a child. In 1960, at the age of 18, Franklin embarked on a secular career, recording for Columbia Records but only achieving modest success. Following her signing to Atlantic Records in 1967, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "Think". These hits and more helped her to gain the title The Queen of Soul by the end of the 1960s decade.
Franklin eventually recorded a total of 112 charted singles on Billboard, including 77 Hot 100 entries, 17 top ten pop singles, 100 R&B entries and twenty number-one R&B singles, becoming the most charted female artist in the chart's history. Franklin also recorded acclaimed albums such as I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Lady Soul, Young, Gifted & Black and Amazing Grace before experiencing problems with her record company by the mid-1970s. After her father was shot in 1979, Franklin left Atlantic and signed with Arista Records, finding success with her part in the film, The Blues Brothers and with the albums, Jump to It and Who's Zoomin' Who?. In 1998, Franklin won international acclaim for singing the opera aria, "Nessun Dorma", at the Grammys of that year replacing Luciano Pavarotti. Later that same year, she scored her final Top 40 recording with "A Rose Is Still a Rose". Franklin's other popular and well known hits include, "Rock Steady", "Something He Can Feel" (from the soundtrack to the 1976 film Sparkle), "Jump to It", "Freeway of Love", "Who's Zoomin' Who", "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves", "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" (with George Michael), "It Isn't, It Wasn't, It Ain't Never Gonna Be" (with Whitney Houston) and a remake of The Rolling Stones song "Jumpin' Jack Flash".
Aretha is a feminine given name that is probably derived from the Greek arete, "virtue",. Notable people with the name include:
Franklin is a term for a historic social class which has come to be used as a given name and surname. It often refers to Benjamin Franklin, a Founding Father of the United States. See also Benjamin Franklin (disambiguation) for other uses of this name.
It may also refer to:
The Medal of Freedom was a decoration established by President Harry S. Truman to honor civilians whose actions aided in the war efforts of the United States and its allies. It was intended to be awarded by the Secretary of State, the Secretary of War, or the Secretary of the Navy, but it is known that Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy also authorized awards.
The medal is a bronze disc whose obverse features the profile bust facing left of an individual wearing a cap resembling an American bald eagle ornamented by stars, with the word "FREEDOM" in capital letters in an arc at the bottom of the disc. The reverse features the Liberty Bell surrounded by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" in capital letters. The medal is suspended on a red ribbon with four thin white stripes. The original Executive Order 9586 establishing the medal specified "No more than one Medal of Freedom shall be awarded to any one person, but for a subsequent act or service justifying such an award a suitable device may be awarded to be worn with the medal" and bronze, silver, and gold palm devices were produced and awarded, but there is no evidence of U.S. citizens having received these palm devices, whereas non-U.S. citizens did receive quite a number of them, and these devices have been interpreted as signifying degrees of the award.
The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800.
The house was designed by Irish-born James Hoban and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia Creek sandstone in the Neoclassical style. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage. However, in 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Construction continued with the addition of the South Portico in 1824 and the North in 1829.

No copyright infringement intended. Full episode from 1999, converted from VHS. I've never seen it anywhere else online and it's such a phenomenal episode, featuring 2 musical performances (one being a medley of songs honoring her father including "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte" and Junior Walker and the All Star's classic "Shotgun" including Aretha's sister Erma, and the other being "We Need Power") plus Aretha making banana pudding. Enjoy!

(BlackTree TV - Los Angeles) We caught up with Grammy performer Yolanda Adams, as she prepared for her moving tribute to singer Aretha Franklin at the 53rd Grammy Awards. The performance, where she performed alongside Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and more will be one to remember for the ages. While Aretha Franklin's recent health ailments might have proved just cause to finally celebrate her achievements, the Grammy Awards tribute to the legendary Queen of Soul was long over due, yet a welcomed grand gesture. Christina Aguilera,Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Florence Welch and Yolanda Adams soulfully performed Franklin's biggest hits including "Ain't No Way," "Respect," "Spirit in the Dark," and "(You Make Me Feel) A Natural Woman." Collectively the ladies scored, but a...
This is the opening song that Aretha Franklin performed at the historic 2013 Gospelfest. Aretha Franklin and T.D. Jakes earned their position in the history of the 30 years of Gospel legends appearing at the annual stellar event. The Queen was spectacular as she peformed her favorite tradtional gospel songs. Although there were many changes, the event continues to provide a worship experience and offers the type of quality that you would expect from the New Jersey faithbased community. Two thumbs up for the IrvingStreet team for putting together another great ensemble of spirited artists.

The White House hosted the International Jazz Day All-Star Global Concert yesterday, and the event featured performances from Herbie Hancock Esperanza Spalding, Buddy Guy, Sting, and a host of others, including Aretha Franklin, who sang a powerful rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” President Barack Obama introduced the event, and he shared an entertaining anecdote about jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie: In 1964, Dizzy Gillespie ran for President. This is a true story. He said, When I am elected president of the United States, my first executive order will be to change the name of The White House to The Blues House. So tonight, we’re going to do right by Dizzy: We are turning this place into The Blues House. And before anybody calls this executive overreach or some sort of power grab, I want...

Aretha Franklin - I say a little prayer - Live HQ 1970 http://www.agoravox.fr/ « "I Say a Little Prayer" is a song written by songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick, originally peaking at number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in December 1967. "I Say a Little Prayer" also returned to the Pop & R&B; Top Ten in the fall of 1968 via a recording by Aretha Franklin taken from her 1968 Aretha Now album; Franklin and her backup singers the Sweet Inspirations were singing the song for fun while rehearsing the songs intended for the album and the viability of Franklin actually recording "I Say a Little Prayer" became apparent. Franklin's version was intended as the B-side of the July 1968 single release "The House that Jack Built" but began to accrue its ow...
