Melbourne youngster Clayton Oliver fails roadside breath test

YOUNG Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver is in hot water after failing a roadside breath test.

The Demons issued a statement on their website this afternoon revealing Oliver told the club’s general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney of his indiscretion while on annual leave.

“We are extremely disappointed in the decisions Clayton made, which led to this,” Mahoney said.

“Not only did he put himself at risk, but he put his passenger and members of the general public at risk and this is completely unacceptable.

“We have discussed this with Clayton and he is extremely remorseful for his actions.

“Clayton understands how lucky he was and that nothing more serious occurred as a result of his poor decision-making on this occasion.”

Mahoney said Oliver had already been penalised by the police, but the club would wait for senior leaders to return to training on Monday “before discussing our response”.

“Clayton has taken the first step by accepting responsibility for his actions,” Mahoney said.

“We are confident that, with the program we will put in place, that he will not only learn from this incident, but also play a role in ensuring other young people do not make the same mistake.”
