Ja Jing-long was convicted of killing a village head, who had ordered the demolition of his home.
The highest court approved Ja's execution last week, but now two newspapers have questioned the sentence and urged leniency.

President Barack Obama's inauguration address on Tuesday was broadcast live around the world. But for Chinese state media, some of his comments apparently hit too close to home.
"Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions."
As soon as the translator said the word "communism," the live broadcast from China's main propaganda station, CCTV, faded out the audio. It had already cut to a CCTV anchor by the time he said this:
"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history."
Here's a clip of the live broadcast from CCTV—the commentator is apparently caught off guard:
The text of Obama's speech was also censored in official online translations and newspapers. Nonetheless, thanks to the Internet, the "silencing of dissent" was incomplete, with the missing phrases spreading quickly on Chinese blogs and websites.

Pyongyang, North Korea (CNN) -- Defying warnings from the international community, North Korea launched a long-range rocket on Friday, but it broke apart before escaping the earth's atmosphere and fell into the sea, officials said.
"It flew about a minute, and it flew into the ocean," said Noriyuki Shikata, a spokesman for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.
He added that Japanese authorities "have not identified any negative impacts, so far," though he said the international ramifications could be significant. "This is something that we think is a regrettable development," he said.
Joseph Cirincione, president of the global security foundation The Ploughshares Fund, told CNN that the launch's apparent failure "shows the weakness of the North Korea missile program" and suggests that the threat from North Korea has been "exaggerated."
"It's a humiliation," he told CNN. "I wouldn't want to be a North Korean rocket scientist today."
In an unusual admission of failure, the North Korean state media announced that the rocket had not managed to put an observation satellite into orbit, which Pyongyang had insisted was the purpose of the launch.
In the past, North Korea has insisted that failed launches have been successful.
"Scientists, technicians and experts are now looking into the cause of the failure," the official Korean Central News Agency said in a report, which was also read out in a news broadcast on state-run television

State media
State media or state-owned media is media for mass communication which is "controlled financially and editorially by the state." These news outlets may be the sole media outlet or may exist in competition with corporate and non-corporate media.
State media is not to be confused with public-sector media, which is "funded directly or indirectly by the state, but over which the state does not have tight editorial control."
Overview
The term state media is primarily understood in contrast to corporate media, and occasionally non-corporate independent news, which has no direct control from any political party. Its content, according to some sources, is usually more prescriptive, telling the audience what to think, particularly as it is under no pressure to attract high ratings or generate advertising revenue and therefore may cater to the forces in control of the state as opposed to the forces in control of the corporation, as described in the propaganda model of the mass media. In more controlled regions, the state may censor content which it deems illegal, immoral or unfavourable to the government and likewise regulate any programming related to the media; therefore, it is not independent of the governing party. In this type of environment, journalists may be required to be members or affiliated with the ruling party, such as in the former Soviet Union or North Korea. Within countries that have high levels of government interference in the media, it may use the state press for propaganda purposes:

Pyongyang, North Korea (CNN) -- Defying warnings from the international community, North Korea launched a long-range rocket on Friday, but it broke apart before escaping the earth's atmosphere and fell into the sea, officials said.
"It flew about a minute, and it flew into the ocean," said Noriyuki Shikata, a spokesman for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.
He added that Japanese authorities "have not identified any negative impacts, so far," though he said the international ramifications could be significant. "This is something that we think is a regrettable development," he said.
Joseph Cirincione, president of the global security foundation The Ploughshares Fund, told CNN that the launch's apparent failure "shows the weakness of the North Korea missile program" and suggests that the threat from North Korea has been "exaggerated."
"It's a humiliation," he told CNN. "I wouldn't want to be a North Korean rocket scientist today."
In an unusual admission of failure, the North Korean state media announced that the rocket had not managed to put an observation satellite into orbit, which Pyongyang had insisted was the purpose of the launch.
In the past, North Korea has insisted that failed launches have been successful.
"Scientists, technicians and experts are now looking into the cause of the failure," the official Korean Central News Agency said in a report, which was also read out in a news broadcast on state-run television

Pyongyang, North Korea (CNN) -- Defying warnings from the international community, North Korea launched a long-range rocket on Friday, but it broke apart before escaping the earth's atmosphere and fell into the sea, officials said.
"It flew about a minute, and it flew into the ocean," said Noriyuki Shikata, a spokesman for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.
He added that Japanese authorities "have not identified any negative impacts, so far," though he said the international ramifications could be significant. "This is something that we think is a regrettable development," he said.
Joseph Cirincione, president of the global security foundation The Ploughshares Fund, told CNN that the launch's apparent failure "shows the weakness of the North Korea missile program" and suggests that the threat from North Korea has been "exaggerated."
"It's a humiliation," he told CNN. "I wouldn't want to be a North Korean rocket scientist today."
In an unusual admission of failure, the North Korean state media announced that the rocket had not managed to put an observation satellite into orbit, which Pyongyang had insisted was the purpose of the launch.
In the past, North Korea has insisted that failed launches have been successful.
"Scientists, technicians and experts are now looking into the cause of the failure," the official Korean Central News Agency said in a report, which was also read out in a news broadcast on state-run television

Brunei, a tiny kingdom in Southeast Asia, has gained notoriety in recent times after the country's ruler decided to impose Islamic law in the country. International media outlets have criticized the Sultan for his decision, which is deemed unwise and hypocritical. Beyond the media portrayal, little is known about Brunei.
This seminar seeks to understand the role of Islam within the Bruneian state and society. The speaker will examine the historical role of Islam in Brunei, expound on the concept of Malay identity, Islam and monarchy (Melayu, Islam, Beraja) that has defined the Bruneian state. He will also draw a trajectory of the future role of Islam in Brunei.
About the Speaker
Amin Abdul Aziz is Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Policy Studies, University of Brunei Darussalam. He is holder of an Ijazah with an unbroken chain of transmission (sanad muttasil) to Prophet Muhammad. He also holds a Master in Islamic Studies graduating overall first and awarded the Abdullah ibn Abbas Award for Excellence in Shari'ah Sciences from the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences, Virginia, USA.
