CALGARY -

A 10-year-old girl is being hailed as a "a very courageous young woman" after Calgary police say she saved her mother's life Thursday night.

Around 4:30 p.m., the girl rushed from her home in the 100 block of Coral Springs Close N.E. to a neighbour's house, where police were called for help. Officers arrived on the scene to find a severely injured woman and a man attacking her with a knife.

Acting Staff Sgt. Darren Smith said luckily police were able to take the offender into custody and rush the woman to the Foothills Medical Centre in life-threatening condition. Smith added that if it wasn't for the daughter's quick response, the outcome could have been very different.

"Absolutely, she saved her mother's life," Smith said.

"From the very beginning, she was heroic. She was able to get out of the house, get to a neighbour and call for help."

The victim has now been upgraded to being in serious but stable condition, with extensive injuries to her face and neck.

Police said the attack does not appear to be domestic in nature. The assailant is believed to be a prior business acquaintance of the victim's husband.

The husband was not home at the time of the attack, according to investigators.

Nurdin Allaudin Dossa, 68, of Calgary is charged with one count of aggravated assault, and his next scheduled appearance in court is Monday, Nov. 21, 2016.

Police said more charges are likely to be laid once they learn more about the motivation for the attack.

The incident remains under investigation, and police are asking anyone with knowledge about the event to call police or Crime Stoppers.
