Best & worst dressed celebrities of the week

In this week's red carpet roundup, Amy Adams pulls off saree chic, Hailee Steinfeld shines in sequins and we feel Ashley Graham's pain. By Nyree McFarlane.

THE GOOD: Hailee Steinfeld = making Keith Haring-inspired yellow sequins look effortless since 2016. The 19-year-old singer-actress (Renaissance-alert) looks confident, stylish and happy in this J. Mendel dress. It manages to not be too 'sequiny' while still being covered in sequins (I know that makes no sense, but I’m running seriously low on shut-eye so just roll with me). Photo: Getty
THE GOOD: Big, bold, on-trend gowns are always a delight, but sometimes in a week this stressful it's just nice to see a dose of Kate Hudson sticking strongly to her timeless personal style in a floaty gown, as we have here with this design, also by J Mendel. I’m deeply impressed by Hudson’s ability to make a somewhat corsetted, nude lace dress look easy breezy and boho. It’s in her genes. PS: #GoldieForPresident2020? Crazier things have happened. Let’s make sure she’s sexually inappropriate about the crotch area of a few lads 30 years her junior in the run up, just to see how that plays and whether that threatens her job security. THE GOOD: Amy Adams is dialing up the polka dot saree chic this week in Carolina Herrera, and I’m finding it delightful. This could look very gift-wrapping-tissue on many, but Amy - partly thanks to Herrera’s artful draping - is straight sleek. PS: I’ve got serious perfect pony envy - if I tried this I’d have 'shark fin' bumps all over my scalp within minutes. My ponytail game is weak. Photo: Getty
THE GOOD: This look makes me as happy as I was in the moment I discovered the ‘reopen closed tab’ function on Google Chrome (CTRL+SHIFT+T mother truckers, thank me later). It’s clean, classic, crisp and simple - with the inky blue hue making it interesting. Bow down Naomie Harris. And again, the design is by Carolina Herrera. Venezuela's finest. Photo: Getty
THE GOOD: Sometimes a midi, long-sleeved sequin job is just the ticket, and Amber Riley is smashing this dress. She’s at an event in London and looked so much warmer than some of the other attendees in their strapless-satin with a side of gooseflesh (although I’m sure she still threw a jacket on the second the outside photos were done). Also, big-hair, don’t-care will always be welcome in my books #VolumeEnvy. PS: I just stalked Amber’s Insta for A LONG time to find out who made this dress. Alas, I failed, but I did discover that Amber replies to almost all of the nice comments on her Insta. I don’t even reply to my emails. She’s a better person than me. Photo: Getty
THE BAD: Gwen Stefani in Marchesa: it’s like the Black Swan tutu has vomited out a flesh-tone underling that has then outgrown its master and is ready for revenge. She looks like some kind of craft project ballerina doll that someone’s made in order to cover toilet rolls (hence the gratuitous layers of tulle). Except this is a craft project that would clearly end up on Regretsy.com (not Etsy). Gwen can make the craziest things work, but this isn’t even in her wheelhouse. Photo: Getty
THE BAD: I adore Marisa Tomei, but that doesn't change the fact this denim boiler suit makes her look like a country singing, gun totin' all-American sky-diving instructor that wears nought but jean-material and chambray ('Make America Great Again' is bedazzled on the back of her jump-suit). THE BAD: While Marisa swathed herself in denim this week, Kelly Rowland appears to have been surprise-attacked by five navy satin pillowcases. They've come at her from all angles, but don’t worry, it looks like her right leg and left arm have almost escaped. The one piece of good news is that this Baja East design is separates: a top and a skant (so at least she’d have been able to go to the toilet with ease throughout the night). Photo: Getty
THE BAD: I love fusion food and most other hybrids, but two dresses seem to have come together with this Christopher Kane design Nicole Kidman is wearing - and this is an instance in which unity is not working for me. Let’s be honest, Nic' looks unconvinced too. For some reason the dress is reminding me of cinematic classic Death Becomes Her (in that moment where their heads twist). I don’t know why exactly, that’s just the energy I’m picking up. Photo: Getty
THE BAD: Ashley Graham is a superhuman goddess, but no one should have to go through the pain of sitting on this beaded jumpsuit by Galia Lahav Haute Couture all night. Is it like a bed of nails and so the fact those sharp beads cover the entire back thigh makes it less painful to sit? Who knows, but the skin indentations would definitely last for weeks. "OMG Ash, your thighs? Is that from some new cupping/accupuncture trend?" "Oh no, I just had to do my stylist a favour and wear this awful jumpsuit last week. It had me looking like a figure skating Kardashian and every time I sat down I felt a sharp stabbing sensation like I had a UTI trapped in my thigh." Photo: Getty
