Subaru concept takes aim at Toyota Kluger

Subaru is set to take on full-sized seven-seat SUVs such as the Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Kluger with its largest car yet.

The brand unveiled its VIZIV-7 concept car at this week's LA motor show, a machine that points to a new model set to go on sale in the US in 2018.

The production version will be a successor of sorts to the discontinued Subaru Tribeca, and the biggest car built by the Japanese marque.

Technical details are slim. It's likely the model will be powered by a turbocharged engine that drives all four wheels, and that the car will feature next-generation Subaru EyeSight safety tech that builds on its current suite of driver aids.

The car looks significantly larger than Subaru's last VIZIV ? or "vision for innovation" ? concept car, which pointed to a new Forester SUV at the 2015 Tokyo motor show.

Subaru says the new concept expresses core brand values such as safety, dependability and that ability to handle off-road motoring.

Subaru executive Takeshi Tachimori says "we know customers in this segment want a full-sized vehicle and the next three-row from Subaru will be the biggest Subaru vehicle ever".
