The fastest-accelerating car on sale just got quicker.

Tesla chief Elon Musk has revealed an "Easter egg" update for the electric Model S P100D that improves its standing-start acceleration, shaving one tenth of a second from its 0-100km/h time.

The innovative brand claims that its new Model S P100D reaches 100km/h in just 2.7 seconds, a time that should drop to 2.6 seconds when a special launch mode is activated.

Musk tweeted that the new model's 0-60mph (96.5km/h) time will drop from 2.5 to 2.4 seconds as a result of the change.

The new model, which arrives in 2016, could push beyond supercar speed into uncharted territory for new cars.

Porsche's 911 Turbo S has a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 2.9 seconds, a feat matched the Ferrari F12tdf and McLaren 675LT supercars and exceeded by Lamborghini's limited-edition Aventador SV, which 100km/h in a claimed 2.8 seconds.

If Tesla can deliver on its claim, the $241,762 Model S P100D will be the fastest-accelerating car on sale by a significant margin.
