About the Author

Born in Solihull, England, Jay Spencer Green has lived in Dublin, Ireland, for over twenty years. He has worked as a factory laborer, college lecturer, database editor, van driver, theater stagehand, court coverer at Wimbledon, hotel dishwasher, and conveyor belt supervisor. Green’s debut novel, Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s, has been described as “savagely funny and deftly anarchic.” He keeps his wit properly sharpened on his blog at jayspencergreen.com.

A truly captivating read

Smiles without the wiles

Ivy Feckett is an endearing hero. She appears hewn from the aftermath of ladette culture, where nerdishness reclaimed ground, and those women who failed the tests of entry cradled their sore heads and wondered what now? Her confusion is always justified, and just how perplexing life can be is gracefully - sometimes ungracefully, sometimes disgracefully - exposed in the course of the story. Ivy is a bit awkward, clueless about some things, most things sometimes. The sort of woman who reads books, proper ones.

What I liked best about this book is that Ivy is never painted as a fool. Sure, some stuff that happens to her is a bit embarrassing, and it could be said that some of these things are her own fault but naivety is never viewed as a punishable offence because Ivy is trying. Her inexperience does hinder her, but we feel for Ivy because we’ve all been her at some point. Parts of us are forever Ivy and that’s not such a bad thing.

I’m also pleased to say, having read Jay Green’s first novel, that the mirthful tone of his writing is still safely intact. Though not as attacking as previously, the amusements delivered this time raise a high smirk bar, and suit the quirkier elements of the story.

Most importantly, I believed in Ivy. Ivy has those around her who believe in her too, and the trials she faces can only succeed in bringing Ivy to a place where she has belief in herself. Or can they? Read to a genuinely memorable end to find out.

The supporting cast of characters is outstanding, very much alive and people I want to know or, alternatively, want to wave a bargepole at. There’s a clever oddness at play too, twisting traditional notions of very British tropes and mashing them together to fuse in a contemporary reference pot, if such a thing exists. Ultimately, this is driven by a cannily and compassionately observed central character, with refreshingly heartwarming results.

‘Ivy Feckett is Looking For Love’ is a romance book for people who don’t like reading romances, but it’s a helluva lot more as well.

This second novel from Jay Spencer Green confirms how much of a superbly talented author he is. In fact, he’s fast becoming one of my favourite fiction writers. His work is so engrossing that one doesn’t even stop to ponder at how expertly executed it is. It’s a world of completeness with relatable characters, a strong story and a lot of fun and funniness.

This book is more mellow and sentimental than his debut, and there’s a constant running humour throughout but it’s not as in-your-face and laugh-out-loudish as ‘Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s’, and that’s not a bad thing, as it shows how adept the author is at maintaining the right feel for a particular story.

There were maybe a couple of bits that I didn’t feel worked, or were needed (the dog’s point of view, for instance) but I know I’m only nitpicking because the rest of the book is so flawless.

The author also has a brilliant knack for making the subplot become a main plot where by the end, you realise that what felt like a cosy romcom is actually also a brilliant send up of religion and a deeply philosophical treatise (which occasionally reminded me of Mick Farren’s ‘The Texts of Festival’ and Luke Rhinehart’s ‘Adventures of Whim’).

Funny, endearing and completely engrossing, this Brummie romance is one I definitely recommend to yow.

Hilarious fun read.

I see what Mr Green is trying here, he is testing the waters, it's been about 2000 years since the first book was released, is the world ready for the sequel to the bible? Here is an sample of what he has been working on:

"And Reagan begat Saddam, and Bush begat Saddam, and Saddam begat war, and Bush begat war, and Bush begat Osama, and Osama begat war, and Bush begat Bush, and Bush begat war, and war begat war.
Hypocrites 9:11"

If the rest of his bible is gonna be of that class then I'm signing up for membership to his cult.

The book contains a brilliant group of characters, the Nerdy Ivy, the best friend Sam, sexy Caroline, awesome Nana, a couple of super sluts and the biggest knob in the literary world (Ned).

The editing is super slick as with his previous book, I could find no fault, no plot holes and no pointless paragraphs. What I did find was myself smirking and getting looks asking what the hell was so funny. I won't say anything about the story, you need to go get yourself a copy and find out for yourself. I'm not a fan of romance stories but this is such a good book you can't help but love it.

Mr Green strikes again!!!

This book is brilliant and extremely funny. A real feel good modern romp of a good, shy girl dreaming of finding her perfect partner. But true love doesn't come easy when there is so much evil in the world ....

Cue a web of shady characters, unfortunate events, master manipulators, and the oh so wise words of the gospel ("If thine eye offends thee, don't look at it. Paradoxes 2:17"), and we have one of the cleverest and funniest books around.

Read and enjoy. Re-read and enjoy even more!

Offbeat romance with a twist

An eccentric, charming romance set - no, rooted - in Birmingham. Vividly drawn characters that stay with you (my personal favourite being Mad Jack Pance and his dog, Pus). Plenty of sly humour, with a softer edge than the caustic wit of the author's acerbic (and wonderful) Breakfast at Cannibal Joe's. Quirky, peculiar, and beguiling.
