John William "Johnny" Carson (October 23, 1925 – January 23, 2005) was an American television host, comedian, writer, producer, actor, and musician, best known for his thirty years as host of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962–1992). Carson received six Emmy Awards, the Governor's Award, and a 1985 Peabody Award. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1987. Johnny Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992 and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993.
Although his show was already successful by the end of the 1960s, during the 1970s Carson became an American icon and remained so even after his retirement in 1992. He adopted a casual, conversational approach with extensive interaction with guests, an approach pioneered by Arthur Godfrey and previous Tonight Show hosts Steve Allen and Jack Paar. Former late-night host and friend, David Letterman, cited Carson's influence.

Plot: The true life story of Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene Jr. In the mid-to-late 1960s, in Washington, D.C., vibrant soul music and exploding social consciousness were combining to unique and powerful effect. It was the place and time for Petey to fully express himself - sometimes to outrageous effect - and "tell it like it is." With the support of his irrepressible and tempestuous girlfriend Vernell, the newly minted ex-con talks his way into an on-air radio gig. He forges a friendship and a partnership with fellow prison inmate Milo's brother Dewey Hughes. From the first wild morning on the air, Petey relies on the more straight-laced Dewey to run interference at WOL-AM, where Dewey is the program director. At the station, Petey becomes an iconic radio personality, surpassing even the established popularity of his fellow disc jockeys, Nighthawk and Sunny Jim. Combining biting humor with social commentary, Petey openly courts controversy for station owner E.G. Sonderling. Petey was determined to make not just himself but his community heard during an exciting and turbulent period in American history. As Petey's voice, humor, and spirit surge across the airwaves with the vitality of the era, listeners tune in to hear not only incredible music but also a man speaking directly to them about race and power in America like few people ever have. Through the years, Petey's "The truth just is" style --- on - and off-air - would redefine both Petey and Dewey, and empower each to become the man he would most like to be.

Found this classic footage by accident at the very end of a 6 hour VHS tape. My theory is, back in the late 1980s, I began recording music concerts on VHS on my parent's TV and I would randomly record over their Johnny Carson recordings. Luckily, I didn't record over Mimi. Yes that's what her family called her "Mimi". She lived to 109. I recently communicated with her great grand daughter who is a writer for Washington Post.

Johnny Carson's final episode of The Tonight Show - May 22, 1992.
I had to upload this because the other one on YouTube had the comments disabled and I had to say that Johnny will be missed and is by far my favorite celebrity of all time. CLASS ACT!! His leaving The Tonight Show was truly the end of an era...his passing made obviously dashed any hopes of any further appearances, and in no small way, I'll never be able to laugh that hard or be entertained that much as when he was the host of The Tonight Show.
24 Years ago today, May 22nd, 1992, Johnny Carson made his final appearance as host of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. In honor of that moment here's a backstage walk through as well as Johnny's final goodbye. Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show for thirty years. Think about that. From 1962 to 1992, Johnny was there. He was a fixture, an icon, and for many, an idol. For the last episode of the show, which aired on May 22, 1992, It’s just Johnny, an audience, his sidekick Ed McMahon and his bandleader Doc Severinsen, some clips, but mostly it’s a long-time TV show host talking to his viewers at home as he seems to realize on the air that a major chapter of his life is ending. We've put together this excerpt in honor of the occasion all of this material is included on the Ultimat...

Tim fine tuned his years of impersonating Johnny Carson into a popular national entertainment feature.
