Incident with a Securitas security guard at the Dow Chemical (former Rohm & Haas) chemical plant on Tidal Road in Deer Park, Texas. This suburb of Houston is rich in chemical plants, and while my typical interest is photographing locomotives, the sign shown in this clip became an interest to me --- as if "our" safety & security have anything to do with it. Watco switches this facility, using at least an SW1500 and an SW9 for power. I've seen two units here at various times, and both times I've had to pull over & photograph through the fence, drawing some very attentive glares from the security at this very location.

Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is used to maintain and control polymer quality at specified production rates because the polymer quality measures have strong interacting nonlinearities with different temperatures and feed rates. Polymer quality measures that are available from the laboratory infrequently are controlled in closed-loop using a NMPC to set the temperature profile of the reactors. NMPC results in better control of polymer quality measures at different production rates as compared to using the nonlinear process model with reaction kinetics to implement offline targets for reactor temperatures. A Linear Model Predictive Controller (LMPC) will not be able to achieve the process objectives because there are strong nonlinear dependencies for polymer quality attributes wi...

With more than a century of experience in manufacturing, the last thing one might expect to hear from DOW Chemical is that the company thinks of itself as startup. “If you would have asked us five years ago what is DOW Chemical, we would have said we’re striving to be the best chemical company in the world,” Jeffrey Tazelaar, global supply chain visibility leader at DOW Chemical, said in his keynote at the Bridges 2016 supply chain conference in New York. “That vision has since changed. If we have heard anything over the last day and a half, change is in the air. Whether it’s technology or new business models, the way we do business has to change in order to meet the times that we’re in and it has to change quickly.” Today DOW Chemical sees itself as an innovation and technology company...
