Mural captures colourful nature of animal lovers

SAGACIOUS and loyal, pet owners often find human qualities in their four-legged companions.

Artist Donald James Waters has celebrated our similarities in his latest mural at the Jacobs Well Professional Centre.

The large-scale piece, that features pedigree pooches with prominent personalities, has evolved over the past month.

When completed, it will cover the front facade, mailboxes and visitors who venture downstairs will also find an alley cat.

“The people that own the centre have always collected my artwork,” he said.

“They said why don’t we give (the building) some real character.

“I love humour in my pieces ... It’s a real family get together centre and we wanted to make it fun.

“Now when you drive into town now you can’t miss it.”

There’s a vet, a cafe and a realtor housed inside the centre and Mr Waters has referenced them all in his artwork with slings, crutches, coffee tables and “sold” signs.

Inspiration was seldom hard to find, with local pups frequenting the pet friendly premises.

“I’ve got two dogs, Doris and Chilli, they sit in the studio and never say the wrong thing,” Mr Waters said.

“They are the perfect accompaniment and they’re both in the painting too.

“They’re handling the fame beautifully it hasn’t gone to their head at all. People sit at the cafe and laugh, passers-by pull up and take a photo.

“It’s really going to the dogs.”
