From the Newsroom, is a new monthly column from National Subscriber Editor, David Rood.


Let’s begin with an exercise. Think of it as your subscriber homework. Grab a pen, or open the notes function on your phone. Now take a moment and write down all the quotes you can recall from the 2016 Australian election. You remember that numbing 55-day marathon? No cheating. No Google.

Here’s what I came up with – if you’ll allow me the shorthand.

Bill Shorten overreaching and labelling a defining moment in the campaign. And Turnbull himself branding ‘Mediscare’ – Labor’s claim that the Coalition wanted to privatise Medicare – as the “biggest lie” of the campaign. A shot of hyperbole, anyone?
