A MAN accused of the shooting murder of Les Brooks has faced court.

Clayton David Backman, 25, appeared in the dock of the Brisbane Magistrates Court wearing watch house-issued clothing.

Magistrate Anthony Gett noted Backman also has charges “coincidentally” in court today for stealing, receiving stolen property and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The court was told those charges are from October 20.

The murder charge has been adjourned to December 19.

Backman represented himself in court and told the magistrate “I handed myself in last night”.

He said he did not have a chance to talk to his lawyer yet.

“(My lawyer) didn’t know until 9.30 this morning,” he said.

When told he couldn’t apply for bail, Backman said “yeah yeah, fine”.

A police officer banged on the glass of the dock to urge Backman to stand up before the magistrate, but he refused.

Backman told his mother, who was sitting in the back of the courtroom, that he loved her as he was led back to the watch house.

His mother, who shook her head throughout the short proceedings, declined to comment outside court.

EARLIER: AN alleged killer has staged a bizarre surrender at the Brisbane watch-house, using an intercom system to tell police he was waiting outside with a loaded shotgun down his pants.

The 25-year-old went to the watch-house late on Thursday night where he pressed the buzzer and told police he’d been involved in the fatal shooting of a man at Tingalpa earlier in the day.

But he also revealed he had a loaded, sawn-off shotgun down the front of his pants, leaving police to deal with a potentially life-threatening situation.

Two officers rushed outside and drew their guns on the man, who put his weapon on the ground. He was taken into custody without incident.

He’s since been charged with murder and unlawful possession of a weapon, over the death of a 32-year-old man — understood to be Les ‘Bomsy’ Brooks — who was shot in the stomach at a Tingalpa house about 4pm Thursday.

The victim was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

Neighbours have reported hearing two men arguing before a gunshot rang out at the Dialba St home.

There’s been high praise for the officers who responded to the watch-house surrender.

“The actions of these two officers were extremely heroic,” Inspector Daniel Bragg told ABC radio.

“They immediately raced to the scene knowing full well this male was handing himself in for quite serious offences and had a loaded firearm down the front of his pants.”

The 25-year-old accused gunman will front the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.

The victim, Mr Brooks, was a father-of-three young children and a keen bodybuilder, with many of his friends recalling his frequent visits to the local gym.

Mr Brooks’ mother, Carol Krezic told The Courier-Mail she was completely devastated by the news.

“I got a call last night from his ex-partner telling me to come over quickly,” Ms Krezic said.

“He was such a good son to me and would always jump in to make sure I was all right”.

Ms Krezic said she couldn’t believe her only son — who worked as a concreter — was gone.

“I’m hugging his T-shirt, I can’t believe it,” she said.

“He was so lovely, he had a heart of gold and would give anyone the shirt off his back to help them.”

According to Ms Krezic, Mr Brooks’ three children, Alexa, 14, Tyler, 4 and Tienna, 2 were at a loss without their father.

“He adored his children, his son loved him so much and they looked so much alike,” she said.

The news of Mr Brooks’ passing spread across social media overnight, with friends and family posting messages of support on Mr Brooks’ Facebook page.

“You were a dead set champion ... I loved our chats in the gym and you will never be forgotten brother,” one man wrote.

One woman, understood to be the mother of Mr Brooks’ eldest child, shared her heartbreak about breaking the news to her daughter.

“I can not (sic) stress how heart breaking it is to watch your beautiful girl literally be crushed upon hearing the words of her father passing!!” the woman wrote.

“It is still so fresh yet good ol fb (Facebook) was on it b4 (sic) I (the mother of his first born) was informed.

“Now because of poor decision making 3 wonderful children have to go without their hero, their pride and joy, their sunshine and didn’t even get to say their goodbyes”.

Mr Brooks was known as a devoted father.

OVERNIGHT: A gunman remains on the run after the fatal shooting of a man in Brisbane’s east yesterday afternoon.

Police have launched a murder investigation after the 32-year-old man was fatally shot in the stomach with a shotgun at a Tingalpa home.

The man was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition, where he later died.

Police were last night on the hunt for the gunman, who is believed to have fled the scene in a car.

Detective Inspector Owen Elloy last night said police had “an idea” who the suspect was.

The Courier-Mail understands a woman and two children lived at the home.

“Shortly before 4 o’clock this afternoon, a male person has attended the address here,” he said.

“Witnesses have stated there’s been a verbal altercation in the backyard area and a loud bang.

“We’re more than satisfied that a male person has been shot.

“We have a vehicle description which we’re investigating and we’ll follow that line of investigation out.”

Insp Elloy confirmed other people were inside the home at the time, but would not reveal if the witnesses were children.

“A number of witnesses have been taken from the scene and are assisting police with statements … at this stage,” he said.

“All I can say is that a lady and two young children live at the house.”

Homicide detectives were last night taking statements from witnesses.

The Child Protection Unit will also assist.

Local resident Kris Wright said the incident was frightening and unexpected.

“About 4 o’clock, I heard a gunshot and then I heard a man yelling, ‘Get an ambulance’,” she said.

“And then I didn’t hear much after that — just muffled women’s voices.

“It’s a bit frightening. It’s very quiet here.”

Police would not confirm reports that the shooter and the victim were both known to the female resident.
