FAQ

How do we qualify?

We ask for the following:

  • That you have a rockstar in-house developer or work with a top consultant (we can recommend a partner)
  • A “Powered by WordPress.com VIP” link on your site
  • Standard hooks in your theme for our stats
  • Custom or GPL compatible themes/plugins.

We can’t accept everyone who applies, but don’t be shy—if this sounds like a good fit, get in touch.

How does code review work?

Changes to your themes, plugins, and custom code are all managed using Subversion. Our VIP support team reviews every line of code you commit for feedback on performance optimizations, security, and best practices, and they handle all of your deployments as well. We have detailed technical documentation your team can review, and our team of engineers is available for guidance, too!

What if we need something deployed urgently?

Code is reviewed and deployed very quickly—around two hours from when it’s committed, on average. We’re also very happy to prioritize a particular change for you if you let us know it’s urgent; we work hard to make sure every site on WordPress.com VIP has bulletproof stability and security, without giving up the flexibility you need to be nimble and responsive to your customers.

Can we use plugins?

Of course! You can run most plugins, so long as they don’t modify database tables or manipulate the file system—neither of those is a good fit for our distributed architecture. And if a particular plugin isn’t a good fit, we’ll work with you to find a suitable alternative.

We also have dozens of popular plugins from the WordPress community and our Featured Partners pre-installed and ready for use.

What’s your uptime?

Pretty great! WordPress.com has 100% uptime most months — see for yourself on our status page, or this independently monitored availability report.

Is our custom code required to be licensed under the GPL?

No, custom code that you and your team have written from scratch does not require a license; however, we do require any WordPress community themes or plugins that you use on your website to be GPL licensed.

How do we register user accounts?

By default, users registered through VIP-hosted websites are created as WordPress.com users, which means that the millions of users logged in to WordPress.com will also be logged in on your domain, making it easier for them to comment on your site. If you’d like to be able to register your own user profiles or create custom registration fields you’ll need to use a 3rd-party registration service.

FAQ

Who should use VIP Support?

Anyone who needs extra help or peace of mind running their WordPress installation, though we primarily expect corporate users and other large-scale WordPress deployments to sign up. VIP Support is also required for those who have VIP Hosting and need development support for their site.

Who provides the support?

The core development team behind the WordPress software and the WordPress.com hosted service which operates tens of millions of sites using the WordPress software.

How does support work?

When you sign up for VIP Support you get access to our private support portal, which you’ll use to initiate a support request.

How are bugs fixed?

If a bug in WordPress causes a problem that you report, we will assign a priority level to it which determines how soon we fix the bug. Level A: the bug causes the software to completely break. We will start fixing it within 24 hours and will get you a custom fix to the problem ASAP. Level B: the bug degrades the performance of the software but a work-around exists. Level C: the bug has a minor impact on the software. We may fix the bug in the next release.

How does the on-site visit work ?

We’ll fly out to your offices and meet directly with your developers for a full day. A week before the visit, you’ll send us an agenda and/or a list of questions that you’d like covered, and as long as it’s WordPress related, we’ll address them as we work with your team.

Which versions of WordPress are supported?

The current versions of WordPress as well as one version previous to the current release.

What does per seat mean?

One seat equals one contact person. When you sign up for a support contract you will specify a contact person who will be interacting with us. If you would like to have multiple people interact with us, you will need to buy multiple subscriptions. We prefer this model to one that charges per server or per number of sites that you are operating. With a single contact you may also specify an alternate for instances where your main contact is on vacation.

What issues aren’t covered by VIP Support?

We cover all issues directly related to WordPress and its plugins and themes, as long as they are either custom or GPL compatible. The goal is to work with your developers to troubleshoot any issues, help optimize your WordPress, and offer best practices. If you have systems issues that fall outside of WordPress—for example, a problem that is specific to your file storage configuration—we may not be able to assist.
