SPACE: Arianespace Launches Four Navigation Satellites Into Orbit November 172:14

Arianespace successfully launched four Galileo satellites into orbit on November 17 from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. The satellites, known as FM7 (Antonianna), FM12 (Lisa), FM13 (Kimberley), and FM14 (Tijmen), were named after children who had won the European Commission?s Galileo drawing competition, Spaceflight Insider reported. Their launch marks the first occasion that Galileo satellites had been taken into orbit by the Ariane 5 launch rocket. Funded by the European Union, Galileo will provide an alternative to the American-controlled GPS and Russian-owned GLONASS satellite navigation system when it is fully operational in 2020.
