STORYLINE:
In Taliban controlled Afghanistan, Western journalists, who had been staying in a Taliban-run compound, were ordered to leave.
A group of about 50 journalists had been staying in the Taliban foreign ministry compound in the border town of Spin Boldak in southern Kandahar province.
The journalists were given two hours to pack and leave for the Pakistani border crossing at Chaman.
A Taliban spokesmen in Spin Boldak said their militia remained firmly in control of four southern provinces, including Kandahar, the movement's spiritual birthplace.
Earlier, APTN was taken to the site where local drivers say their oil tankers were blown up by U-S forces.
Some parts of the destroyed tankers were still smoking.
The drivers said that four days ago their convoy, which runs oil between Iran and Pakistan, was stopped in the desert region west of Kandahar province by American troops.
The troops wanted to know if they were Taliban but despite the drivers' protests that they were not, the tankers were destroyed anyway.
The drivers said that they were tied up and then Americans helicopters came and bombed the whole convoy.
In an interview four days ago, one of the other drivers who was involved, had said that communication was difficult between his group and the Americans because none of the soldiers spoke Pashtu.

Spin Boldak
Spin Boldak, meaning 'white desert', is a border town and the headquarters of Spin Boldak District in the southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan, next to the Durand Line border with Pakistan. It is linked by a highway with the city of Kandahar to the north, and with Chaman and Quetta in Pakistan to the south. Spin Boldak has the second major port of entry between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Wesh-Chaman border crossing. It is also a major transporting, shipping and receiving site between the two neighboring countries.
The district is populated mostly by Noorzai and Achakzai Pashtuns.
Other names: Spīn Baldak, سپین بولدک, Spīn Būldak, Spīn Bōldak, Spin Baldak. Kandahar and Quetta are about 40 and 50 nmi (93 km) respectively distant by air, and have the closest medium-sized airports; Pishin, Pakistan has a small airport 40 nmi (74 km) to the east.
Insurgent Activity
In January, 2006, "a suicide bomber on a motorbike killed at least 20 people and wounded 20 more," according to one report. "The attacker drove the vehicle into a crowd watching a wrestling match and detonated a bomb, said Kandahar provincial Gov. Asadullah Khalid." The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

STORYLINE:
In Taliban controlled Afghanistan, Western journalists, who had been staying in a Taliban-run compound, were ordered to leave.
A group of about 50 journalists had been staying in the Taliban foreign ministry compound in the border town of Spin Boldak in southern Kandahar province.
The journalists were given two hours to pack and leave for the Pakistani border crossing at Chaman.
A Taliban spokesmen in Spin Boldak said their militia remained firmly in control of four southern provinces, including Kandahar, the movement's spiritual birthplace.
Earlier, APTN was taken to the site where local drivers say their oil tankers were blown up by U-S forces.
Some parts of the destroyed tankers were still smoking.
The drivers said that four days ago their convoy, which runs oil between Iran and Pakistan, was stopped in the desert region west of Kandahar province by American troops.
The troops wanted to know if they were Taliban but despite the drivers' protests that they were not, the tankers were destroyed anyway.
The drivers said that they were tied up and then Americans helicopters came and bombed the whole convoy.
In an interview four days ago, one of the other drivers who was involved, had said that communication was difficult between his group and the Americans because none of the soldiers spoke Pashtu.

A suicide bomber on a motorbike killed at least 12 people and injured at least 20 others on Monday in the Afghan border town of Spin Boldak, the deadliest in a recent spate of attacks, officials said.
Pakistani authorities opened the border in order to allow the casualties to receive treatment in the nearby Pakistani district hospital of Chaman, according to eyewitnesses.
Several people injured in the attack could be seen receiving treatment in the wards.
One eyewitness said the attack happened as he attended a wrestling competition with his team.
"One motorbike exploded and everywhere the people got scared, many were wounded and some were killed. It was a terrible moment," said Yar Muhammad, whose brother was injured in the incident.
An unidentified man had driven his bike into a crowd of about 100 people watching a wrestling match at a fair in Spin Boldak, a key crossing point into southern Pakistan, and detonated explosives strapped to his body, according to a Kandahar provincial official.
He added that at least 12 people were killed, as well as the attacker, and more than 20 were wounded, at least five of them seriously.
However, a government administrator in Chaman said more than 30 injured people were treated in a hospital there.
Many of them are said to be in a critical condition.
It was the third bombing in Kandahar province, a former Taliban stronghold, in the past two days, and the bloodiest in a series of about 25 suicide attacks across the country over the past four months.
Just hours earlier, a bomb had hit a convoy of Afghan army trucks packed with troops in the provincial capital of Kandahar, killing four people and wounding 16.

STORYLINE:
A suicide car bomber targeting a Canadian military convoy detonated his explosives at a busy market in southern Afghanistan on Monday, killing 37 civilians, officials said.
At least 30 more people were wounded in the attack in Spin Boldak, a town in Kandahar province near the border with Pakistan, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.
The region's governor Asadullah Khalid said three Canadian soldiers were lightly wounded.
Footage filmed from the Pakistan side of the border by AP Television showed smoke rising from the site of the attack and the presence of military vehicles at the scene.
Two badly injured men were also seen being lifted out of open-backed truck and being put into another vehicle on the Pakistan side of the border.
Though the Afghan-Pakistan border was closed on Monday because of elections in Pakistan, several of the wounded from the Spin Boldak blast were allowed across the border to the nearby hospital in Chaman.
A doctor at the hospital said that nine Afghan civilians were treated at his facility and that one later died.
He added that several of the wounded were in critical condition and that the death toll could rise.
The attack comes one day after Afghanistan's deadliest bombing since the 2001 United States-led invasion.
More than 100 people were killed on Sunday by a suicide bomber outside Kandahar city, Khalid said on Monday, raising the original death toll of 80.
The back-to-back bombings made the two-day period the deadliest for Afghan civilians since the Taliban's ouster.
The attacks could also serve as a warning that insurgents have changed tactics.
Though militant attacks occasionally have killed dozens of civilians, insurgents have generally sought to avoid targeting ordinary Afghans.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for Monday's attack.
A spokesman said the bombing was carried out by an Abdul Rahman from Kandahar.
When asked about the large number of civilians killed, the spokesman claimed that 10 foreign soldiers and "a large number of police" were killed; officials gave no indication that was true.
A spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force in southern Afghanistan, said no NATO troops were killed in the attack, but he did not know if any were wounded.
He said ISAF forces provided medical assistance at the scene.
One of the Canadian military vehicles was heavily damaged in the attack, as were several shops and civilian vehicles, said a local police chief.
Afghanistan had a record level of violence last year, and analysts and military leaders here have predicted that 2008 could turn even deadlier.

A spate of suicide bombings and other attacks on security forces in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday left 13 people dead and 24 others wounded, officials said.
In Kandahar province, a suicide bomber blew himself up next to a vehicle carrying intelligence agents in the border town of Spin Boldak, killing three civilians, according to Kandahar Governor Assadullah Khalid.
Local doctor Ghulam Jan confirmed the death toll.
"At 11am local time a suicide bomber blew himself up and as a result three civilians were killed and 14 were wounded including three Afghan intelligence agents," he said.
Two children and three intelligence agents were among the 14 hurt.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said the insurgent group was behind the attack and identified the bomber as a man named Gul Mohammad.
A 16-year-old boy who was wounded in the explosion said police shot at the bomber before he detonated explosives.
In neighbouring Helmand province, a suicide bomber struck a police convoy, killing two officers and wounding three, said police chief.
As the bomber approached the car, guards opened fire, wounding the attacker, who then blew himself up.
Southern Afghanistan is the centre of the Taliban-led insurgency.
In eastern Kunar province, Taliban militants attacked a police border post, killing five officers and wounding seven others, according to provincial police.
However, Commander of Afghan forces on the Afghan-Pakistan border, Colonel Ismatullah Safi reported five soldiers were killed and four wounded.
The exact number of people injured could not be independently verified.
Television footage from the Kunar region showed residents loading coffins onto trucks near Kunar hospital.
