Candidiasis is a fungal infection due to any type of Candida (a type of yeast). When it affects the mouth, it is commonly called thrush. Signs and symptoms include white patches on the tongue or other areas of the mouth and throat. Other symptoms may include soreness and problems swallowing. When it affects the vagina, it is commonly called a yeast infection. Signs and symptoms include genital itching, burning, and sometimes a white "cottage cheese-like" discharge from the vagina. Less commonly the penis may be affected, resulting in itchiness. Very rarely, the infection may become invasive spreading throughout the body, resulting in fevers along with other symptoms depending on the parts of the body affected.
More than 20 types of Candida can cause infection with Candida albicans being the most common. Infections of the mouth are most common among children less than one month old, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems. Conditions that result in a weak immune system include HIV/AIDS, the medications used after organ transplantation, diabetes, and the use of corticosteroids. Other risks include dentures and following antibiotic therapy. Vaginal infections occur more commonly during pregnancy, in those with weak immune systems, and following antibiotic use. Risk for widespread infection includes being in an intensive care unit, following surgery, low birth weight infants, and those with weak immune systems.

Overgrowth of the fungus results in candidiasis (candidosis). Candidiasis is often observed in immunocompromised individuals, including HIV-infected patients. A common form of candidiasis restricted to the mucosal membranes in mouth or vagina is thrush, which is usually easily cured in people who are not immunocompromised. For example, higher prevalence of colonization of C. albicans was reported in young individuals with tongue piercing, in comparison to unpierced matched individuals. To infect host tissue, the usual unicellular yeast-like form of C. albicans reacts to environmental cues and switches into an invasive, multicellular filamentous form, a phenomenon called dimorphism. In addition, an overgrowth infection is considered superinfection, usually applied when an infection become opportunistic and very resistant to antifungals. It then becomes suppressed by antibiotics. This soreness may lead to pain during urination or pain during intercourse.
A vaginal discharge relating to a vaginal yeast infection will have the appearance of cottage cheese and may have an odor that is slightly like bread or beer because the underlying cause of the infection is essentially a fungus.
While there are many conventional treatments for candidiasis, these can be rather expensive, have various side effects and may not prevent the recurrence of this infection. Some of these treatments may not only treat candidiasis but may also lead to other vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis.
A Few Natural Remedies For Vaginal Yeast Infections
An increasing number of women are turning towards natural means of healing to cure yeast infections and prevent recurrence which is a big problem when using conventional treatment methods.
Natural remedies for vaginal yeast infections attempt to use probiotics to facilitate healing. Probiotics are friendly microbial organisms naturally occurring in the vagina and digestive tract and in the case of candidiasis, will suppress the excessive growth of Candida Albicans. These natural remedies seek to work with the body and not against it using various ingredients that are readily available in a home or at a local health store.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is probably one of the most effective natural remedies for vaginal yeast infections. Mixing this with some warm water and applying to the vagina for about 20 minutes at most twice a week will get you on the road to healing.
2. Honey
Although a complaint with using honey is that it is sticky which can make this remedy uncomfortable, this is still one of the most effective natural remedies for vaginal yeast infections that consistently produces positive results. What you need to do is apply the honey to the vaginal area and wait about 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
3. Garlic
Garlic is another effective remedy for the various symptoms of candidiasis. The only drawback is the smell but this is still a very effective remedy. You will need about two cloves of garlic that you will need to turn into a paste by crushing them. Apply this to the vaginal areas to combat candidiasis. The anti bacterial properties contained in garlic are one of the most effective natural remedies for vaginal yeast infections.
