Stuart Broad signs up to play Big Bash League

STAR English pace bowler Stuart Broad has signed with the Hobart Hurricanes for the upcoming sixth edition of the Big Bash League.

Following the Hurricanes confirming last week that they were in contact with the Australian Ashes tormentor to fill their vacant second international contract, they announced on Sunday night that the 30-year-old had put pen to paper for BBL06.

Broad, who has just finished representing England in their home Test series against Pakistan and is currently playing for County side Nottinghamshire, said Hurricanes all-rounder Dan Christian had helped convince him to come to Hobart.

“From a personal point of view the BBL looks like a fantastic competition to be involved in,” he said.

“Australia is one of my favourite places to play, the pitches and crowds make for great cricket and atmosphere is fantastic.

“It’s been really good having Hurricanes teammate Dan Christian playing with me at Notts, who has been really positive about the Hobart Hurricanes and also the city of Hobart, which I’m looking forward to embracing.”

A former T20 captain of England, Broad will take the contract former West Indies T20 captain Darren Sammy had for the past two BBL seasons.

The Hurricanes also pursued West Indian World T20 hero Carlos Brathwaite but coach Damien Wright said Broad fitted their need of a death bowler to a tee.

“He will give us great firepower with the ball and will be a fantastic inclusion into our pace attack joining (Shaun) Tait, (Jake) Reed and (Sam) Rainbird,” Wright said.

“It was key to find someone who could contribute in a big way with the ball and we believe we’ve signed one of the very best to do this.

“He is a terrific fella who is determined to do well throughout the Big Bash as well as seeing this as a great opportunity to put himself back in contention for England in the shorter formats of the game.”

Ranked fourth in the world on the Test bowling rankings, Broad was able to play for the Hurricanes in the BBL as he has not been included in England’s T20 side since 2014 and their ODI squad since earlier this year despite taking 65 T20 international wickets and 178 ODI scalps.

The signing of Broad – who joins Sri Lankan superstar Kumar Sangakkara as Hobart’s two international contracted players - means the Hurricanes have to fill three more spots on their roster before BBL06 begins in December.
