I'm having trouble with lists

If you are having difficulty creating or managing your lists, read on to find out possible causes of your issue and how to fix them.

List limits

Limits alleviate some of the strain on the behind-the-scenes part of Twitter and reduce downtime and error pages. For the sake of reliability, we've placed some limits on Twitter lists:

  • 1000 lists permitted per user
  • 5000 users permitted per list
  • List names cannot exceed 25 characters
  • List names cannot begin with a numerical character

Mentioning lists

  • You can link to any Twitter List by mentioning it as you would any Twitter user, just add a forward slash ("/") followed by the list name to list owners username: @[username]/[list-name] (example: @SchauerTime/News)
  • Note: renaming a list will break any links you've posted to that list.

@Replies on lists

  • Replies work the same way for lists as they do for accounts. This means that if User A and User B are on a list and they mention each other, those replies will appear in the list. However, if only User A is on a list and User A replies to User B, that reply will not appear on the list.
  • There is no feature that enables users or list owners to send a message to every user on a list.

Users with protected Tweets on Lists

  • Users who have opted to protect their Tweets can be added to lists. However, you will only see a user's protected Tweets if you have been approved to follow that user.
  • Other users who view your list will likewise only see a user's protected Tweets if they have been approved to follow that user.

Private lists

Private lists are different from protected Tweets. Only you can view your private lists and private lists owned by other users will not be visible to you.

Creating lists

  • If you are unable to view a list you've recently created, try refreshing the page or clearing your browser's cache.
  • Doing this should pull in any new lists you've created so that you can view them on your profile.
