"The Orion work was commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad 2004 and received its premiere performance in Athens, June 2004, just before the Olympic Games. To mark this special event I chose to collaborate with a group of established musicians and composers - a group whose multiethnic origins reflect the international nature of the Olympiad itself.
"Just as cultures are linked by shared themes, a common history and customs, so we -- each separately and all together - are linked by the common quality of the natural world: rivers, oceans, our environment, its forests and mountains. And stars. Man has gazed up at the stars since the birth of humanity. This is the origin of astrology, astronomy, the measurement of the seasons and the first steps of science. I believe there is no single experience in the world which tells us more than the vastness of space, and the innumerable heavenly bodies. And thus the stars form a bond between us all - regardless of country, nationality, regardless even of time.
"Orion, the largest constellation in the night sky, can be seen at all times of year, from both hemispheres. It seems that almost every civilisation has created myths and drawn inspiration from Orion. As the project advanced each of the musicians and composers, myself included, used part of this inspiration to aid us in our creative task.

The first part of this video shows miners, the colliery yard and narrow gauge overhead electric trains at a mine at Yuanbaoshan in NE China in 2011.
The second part of the video shows the large open cast mine at Pingzhuang which opened in 1958 and which is served mainly by East German LEW standard gauge electric locomotives, and a very brief look at a steam train serving the deep mines.
The electric locomotives (1500 V DC BoBo-engines) are seen on the tracks behind the industrial complex tipping out loaded wagons and working to and from the open cast mine. The open cast mine is a fascinating system (but long past its glory days) with unusual electric veterans.
The electric locomotives were built by VEB Lokomotivbau -- Elektrotechnische Werke 'Hans Beimler' of Hennigsdorf near Berlin (the site formerly occupied by AEG and Borsig plants, now a part of Bombardier), commonly known as LEW. This factory supplied a number of locomotives for the mining industry. LEW built three basic types of locomotives for open-pit mines: six-axle EL1 and four-axle EL2 for standard gauge and four-axle EL3 for the 900 mm gauge. All were based on pre-war AEG design (from late 1920s, further developed during WWII) and had many common features. Heavy, 150-tonne EL1s were built for export to the Soviet Union and China only, but two remaining types have found more widespread use. The first EL2s appeared in 1952 and subsequently this type was built in large numbers, enjoying a very long production run: last examples left the assembly lines in 1988. First deliveries were to open-pit mines in East Germany. Later EL2s were exported to the Soviet Union, China (186, between 1957 and 1984), Bulgaria and Poland. Despite comparatively young age, the EL2 class has already earned itself a heritage locomotive status: in December 2007, withdrawn 4-1124 (LEW 13605/1980) was plinthed at the Bombardier -- Werk Henningsdorf premises.
The EL2 is a robust and straightforward machine with the Bo'Bo' axle arrangement, designed to haul heavy loads at a moderate speed. These somewhat archaic-looking, but efficient locomotives, are a reminder of the early years of electrification.

Philip Glass
Philip Morris Glass (born January 31, 1937) is a classical American composer. He is considered one of the most influential music makers of the late 20th century. His music is also often controversially described as minimal music, along with the work of the other "major minimalists" La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich.
Glass has distanced himself from the "minimalist" label, describing himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures". Though his early mature music shares much with what is normally called "minimalist", he has since evolved stylistically. Currently, he describes himself as a "classicist", pointing out that he is trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied such composers as Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Nadia Boulanger.
Glass has founded his namesake musical group, the Philip Glass Ensemble, with which he still performs on keyboards, and has written operas, musical theatre works, ten symphonies, eleven concertos, solo works, chamber music including seven string quartets and instrumental sonatas, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.

The electric locomotives (1500 V DC BoBo-engines) are seen on the tracks behind the industrial complex tipping out loaded wagons and working to and from the open cast mine. The open cast mine is a fascinating system (but long past its glory days) with unusual electric veterans. The electric locomotives were built by VEB Lokomotivbau -- Elektrotechnische Werke 'Hans Beimler' of Hennigsdorf near Berlin (the site formerly occupied by AEG and Borsig plants, now a part of Bombardier), commonly known as LEW. This factory supplied a number of locomotives for the mining industry. LEW built three basic types of locomotives for open-pit mines: six-axle EL1 and four-axle EL2 for standard gauge and four-axle EL3 for the 900 mm gauge. All were based on pre-war AEG design (from late 1920s, further developed during WWII) and had many common features. Heavy, 150-tonne EL1s were built for export to the Soviet Union and China only, but two remaining types have found more widespread use. The first EL2s appeared in 1952 and subsequently this type was built in large numbers, enjoying a very long production run: last examples left the assembly lines in 1988. First deliveries were to open-pit mines in East Germany. Later EL2s were exported to the Soviet Union, China (186, between 1957 and 1984), Bulgaria and Poland. Despite comparatively young age, the EL2 class has already earned itself a heritage locomotive status: in December 2007, withdrawn 4-1124 (LEW 13605/1980) was plinthed at the Bombardier -- Werk Henningsdorf premises. The EL2 is a robust and straightforward machine with the Bo'Bo' axle arrangement, designed to haul heavy loads at a moderate speed. These somewhat archaic-looking, but efficient locomotives, are a reminder of the early years of electrification. A later video will show steam trains at Pingzhuang. China steam finale - electric interlude at Pingzhuang and Yangbaoshan, September 2011
The first part of this video shows miners, the colliery yard and narrow gauge overhead electric trains at a mine at Yuanbaoshan in NE China in 2011. The second part of the video shows the large open cast mine at Pingzhuang which opened in 1958 and which is served mainly by East German LEW standard gauge electric locomotives, and a very brief look at a steam train serving the deep mines. The electric locomotives (1500 V DC BoBo-engines) are seen on the tracks behind the industrial complex tipping out loaded wagons and working to and from the open cast mine. The open cast mine is a fascinating system (but long past its glory days) with unusual electric veterans. Transcending time and place with his emotionally charged productions, both clever in their concoctions, we get two original works on the EP - Interlude and China, from analog symphonies to pacing rhythm, each has a unique path carved out for itself, whether it’s the sophisticated and driven high of Interlude, or the heavy hypnotic euphoria that blitzes its way through China, the output on these from the dance-floor to the airwaves has been noteworthy.
To celebrate Kris Davis’s debut on Crossfrontier Audio, two of the label’s much loved staples have adapted the originals. Reacting to the energy, and pouring in his own essence, label boss Marc Poppcke’s remix of Interlude adds a drop of tentative darkness and depth to an already dangerous killer. While ricocheting through China with a melodious touch, Yoram gives us a lightshow for the synapses... firing on all cylinders.

And stars. Man has gazed up at the stars since the birth of humanity. This is the origin of astrology, astronomy, the measurement of the seasons and the first steps of science. I believe there is no single experience in the world which tells us more than the vastness of space, and the innumerable heavenly bodies. And thus the stars form a bond between us all - regardless of country, nationality, regardless even of time.
"Orion, the largest constellation in the night sky, can be seen at all times of year, from both hemispheres. It seems that almost every civilisation has created myths and drawn inspiration from Orion. As the project advanced each of the musicians and composers, myself included, used part of this inspiration to aid us in our creative task.

Orange Mountain Music
"The Orion work was commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad 2004 and received its premiere performance in Athens, June 2004, just before the Olympic Games. To mark this special event I chose to collaborate with a group of established musicians and composers - a group whose multiethnic origins reflect the international nature of the Olympiad itself.
"Just as cultures are linked by shared themes, a common history and customs, so we -- each separately and all together - are linked by the common quality of the natural world: rivers, oceans, our environment, its forests and mountains. And stars. Man has gazed up at the stars since the birth of humanity. This is the origin of astrology, astronomy, the measurement of the seasons and the first steps of science. I believe there is no single experience in the world which tells us more than the vastness of space, and the innumerable heavenly bodies. And thus the stars form a bond between us all - regardless of country, nationality, regardless even of time.
"Orion, the largest constellation in the night sky, can be seen at all times of year, from both hemispheres. It seems that almost every civilisation has created myths and drawn inspiration from Orion. As the project advanced each of the musicians and composers, myself included, used part of this inspiration to aid us in our creative task.

The first part of this video shows miners, the colliery yard and narrow gauge overhead electric trains at a mine at Yuanbaoshan in NE China in 2011.
The second part of the video shows the large open cast mine at Pingzhuang which opened in 1958 and which is served mainly by East German LEW standard gauge electric locomotives, and a very brief look at a steam train serving the deep mines.
The electric locomotives (1500 V DC BoBo-engines) are seen on the tracks behind the industrial complex tipping out loaded wagons and working to and from the open cast mine. The open cast mine is a fascinating system (but long past its glory days) with unusual electric veterans.
The electric locomotives were built by VEB Lokomotivbau -- Elektrotechnische Werke 'Hans Beimler' of Hennigsdorf near Berlin (the site formerly occupied by AEG and Borsig plants, now a part of Bombardier), commonly known as LEW. This factory supplied a number of locomotives for the mining industry. LEW built three basic types of locomotives for open-pit mines: six-axle EL1 and four-axle EL2 for standard gauge and four-axle EL3 for the 900 mm gauge. All were based on pre-war AEG design (from late 1920s, further developed during WWII) and had many common features. Heavy, 150-tonne EL1s were built for export to the Soviet Union and China only, but two remaining types have found more widespread use. The first EL2s appeared in 1952 and subsequently this type was built in large numbers, enjoying a very long production run: last examples left the assembly lines in 1988. First deliveries were to open-pit mines in East Germany. Later EL2s were exported to the Soviet Union, China (186, between 1957 and 1984), Bulgaria and Poland. Despite comparatively young age, the EL2 class has already earned itself a heritage locomotive status: in December 2007, withdrawn 4-1124 (LEW 13605/1980) was plinthed at the Bombardier -- Werk Henningsdorf premises.
The EL2 is a robust and straightforward machine with the Bo'Bo' axle arrangement, designed to haul heavy loads at a moderate speed. These somewhat archaic-looking, but efficient locomotives, are a reminder of the early years of electrification.

So tonight is our very last night in Yangshuo, a charming little town in Southwestern China, so we're going to show you around the main strip.
So our first stop is going to be the street food market. I haven't eaten in maybe two hours, so it's time to get a snack.
If I had to choose between Guilin and Yangshuo the two most popular cities in this region it's definitely Yangshuo. It's a more historic town. It's a lot more pedestrian friendly and there are great
As we were wandering around the night market tonight we had lots of people come up to us and ask to take photos beside us. At least probably four or five times and we finally filmed the last one. It was really cool. We were like celebrities in China. Yeah, almost famous.
So, this market had some pretty cool souvenirs. We saw fake Chinese passports if you want to take one of those home. They also had combs carved out of ox bone. They had these stamps where you can get your Chinese name carved on them and then you can just sign documents that way which is pretty cool.
Today we are visiting a local hill tribe that just lives a few hours outside of Guilin and we've come here because this community is known for the women's long hair. They grow it out and it's almost a meter and a half long and we're actually going to be watching a performance where they spin their hair and wrap it up and show us how they wear it.
Today we're in between Guilin and Yangshuo and we're doing a special river cruise down the Li River.
So this tour is going to be an hour and a half long and we're going to get to enjoy some pretty stunning landscapes, so I'm pretty excited about it.
When I came here two years ago it was hazy and foggy. Now it's a gorgeous glorious day.
Here we are at the Longji Rice Fields which are located just outside of Guilin. We've had such good luck. Check out the weather and the views behind.
So this is the Guilin main square. It gets really busy here at night. Lots of shops, restaurants, eateries. You can do it all here.
Chinese singing.
So we are now at the lake and the main attraction are the these two pagodas that light up at night.
Background music playing.
Oh, that mapo tofu looks so good. Really generous sized portion.
Well, it's hard to believe but our time in Hong Kong has already expired. Today we're taking a train ride. Where are we going? We're crossing over into China.
We are in Guangzho. Apparently there are two train stations. We arrived at the one that is on the East End of the City and we had to get across town to the other and it was difficult but we need to keep going.
So right now we are in Guangzho station waiting for our train to Guilin. And we happen to be waiting in the VIP room.
There is no tea in this tea room.
We're going to Guilin.
Uh, we're looking for number ten.
So we're in the dining cart now getting ready to have dinner. Let's see what is on the menu if we can even read it. We barely got a seat here.
Decision time. So we did manage to find an English menu which makes things a lot easier.
Fish one. Tofu with pork. One. Okay. Rice. One Rice? Okay. Beer. One. Okay. Ah, green tea - one. okay.
So this is the friend fish with a sweet and sour sauce.
Good morning. We are almost in Guilin. Our train has been delayed about an hour and a half.

Close to Badaling the Great Wall Of China extends majestically across misty mountains. It is the largest Man-made structure in the world and was erected to protect the country from invasion from the North. The gigantic wall represented the division of two very different cultures. One of two stunning 16mm home movies shot by Ward Harris in the 1930s, this color film shows scenes of the U.K. including England as it appeared before WWII. Harris was an Edison Mimeograph dealer in San Francisco in the late 1920s and an avid collector of things related to Thomas Edison. His famous collection included phonographs, batteries, light bulbs and other electrical equipment including Edison toasters, etc. and was so large that at one point an inventory revealed it had 50,000 items. We Are Driven is a documentary film that has been 2 years in the making. From the East, to the West, Chicago, New England, Atlanta, Maryland, and more. In this documentary you will learn what it really takes to build a car, and all of the passion and struggles that go into it. You will get an inside look at the history of CANIBEAT, an inside look at the WEKFEST event series, hear from photographers, shop owners, and those that truly live by a eat, sleep, cars lifestyle. All interviews were recorded in real environment and not in a studio. This documentary sounds best through most sound systems. Laptop speakers, cheap earbuds, and basic tv speakers may make it sound a little weak.
The idea of We Are Driven first started in late 2011. We originally had planned on making a "demo reel" for 2011 and my friend said to me "You should make something different, and interview some of the people involved in the car scene." From there we decided to completely put the idea on pause for a year and a half, and tried to gain as much inside information from some of the top names in the game today.

One of two stunning 16mm home movies shot by Ward Harris in the 1930s, this color film shows scenes of the U.K. including England as it appeared before WWII. Harris was an Edison Mimeograph dealer in San Francisco in the late 1920s and an avid collector of things related to Thomas Edison. His famous collection included phonographs, batteries, light bulbs and other electrical equipment including Edison toasters, etc. and was so large that at one point an inventory revealed it had 50,000 items. Unfortunately with his death in the 1950s the entire collection was dispersed. This film and its companion are the only ones of a series of films made by Harris that apparently survived.
The film begins with scenes shot at Stonehenge and Bath, and includes a brief history of England (which would have been narrated by Harris himself, probably on an Edison recording; but this version of the film is silent and we do not have the recording to accompany it sad to say).
At 8:57 you will see London, with Harris himself shown at 10:10 feeding pigeons. Trafalgar Square is seen at 10:30. At 11:30, a train trip is taken.
At the 12:38 mark, a brief interlude (which again would have been narrated by Harris) as a man in China makes an Ediphone mimeograph recording as part of the film. At 13:17, rural life in the U.K. is seen with a farmer using a tractor to tend his crops.
We could definitely use your help identifying the town seen at 13:57, possibly Stratford on Avon but probably not.
At 16:54, fishermen or life guards are seen pushing a large boat out to sea.
At 21:28, a house has a grass roof trimmed and placed.
At 23:52, we see what appears to be Royal Guardsmen, and possibly Kensington or Buckingham Palace.
