Emmy Awards 2016: John Oliver hits back at Angela Bishop

EMMY winning comedian John Oliver criticised Channel Ten’s entertainment reporter Angela Bishop over Australia’s immigration policies after she pulled him up on previous comments he made about Donald Trump.

Ms Bishop confronted The Last Week Tonight comic backstage after his win at the Emmy Awards on Monday, reminding him of his comments he made on the red carpet of last year’s star-studded ceremony.

Oliver told her that US voters would not elect Donald Trump as president.

“Do you remember last year?” Ms Bishop asked.

His comeback then was to reply: “Well ... let’s give us a chance. Have some faith, Angela.”

“Also maybe check on the state of your own country’s immigration policies before you steer it too hard on this one,” he added.

“Harsh, harsh,” Ms Bishop replied.

When she then asked him what he was going to do about it, he said to her simply: “Well I can’t vote ... I’m not really involved in this.”

Ms Bishop then replied: “But you get to comment”.

Oliver said he could, as that was part of “freedom of speech”.

Ms Bishop later posted a selfie on her Instagram of them together after the Emmy Award ceremony.

John Oliver slams Angela Bishop

Last year when he met Ms Bishop, he was happy that former prime minister Tony Abbott had been ousted from the nation’s top job.

“I don’t know what the point of Tony Abbott was, but it was fun while it lasted,” he said.

“It was like taking heroin. It was incredibly exhilarating and it was right that you stopped.”

At the time, he told her he did not think Americans would elect Donald Trump as their President.

“Yeah, but I don’t think they’re going to elect him. You did elect Tony Abbott,” he said.

While US voters head to the polls on Tuesday, November 8, he also told Ms Bishop he would continue to make comments about the US election over the next two months.
