Sigiriya (Lion Rock Sinhalese: සීගිරිය, Tamil: சிகிரியா, pronounced see-gi-ri-yə) is an ancient palace located in the central Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres (660 ft) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure —Sīhāgiri, the Lion Rock. The capital and the royal palace was abandoned after the king's death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.
Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning. It is the most visited historic site in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka (/sriːˈlɑːŋkə, -ˈlæŋkə/ or i/ʃriː-/;Sinhalese - ශ්රී ලංකාව, Tamil Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and known from the beginning of British colonial rule until 1972 as Ceylon (/sᵻˈlɒnˌ seɪ-ˌ siː-/), is an island country in South Asia near south-east India.
Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II.
A diverse and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages. In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, dates back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC. The country's recent history has been marred by a thirty-year civil war which decisively ended when Sri Lankan military defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009.
Lanka /ˈlæŋkə/ (Sanskrit lankā "island") is the name given in Hindu mythology to the island fortress capital of the legendary demon king Ravana in the epics of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The fortress was situated on a plateau between three mountain peaks known as the Trikuta Mountains. The ancient city of Lankapura is thought to have been burnt down by Hanuman. After its king, Ravana, was killed by Rama with the help of his brother Vibhishana, the latter was crowned king of Lankapura. The mythological site of Lankā is identified with Sri Lanka. His descendants were said to still rule the kingdom during the period of the Pandavas. According to the Mahabharata, the Pandava Sahadeva visited this kingdom during his southern military campaign for the rajasuya of Yudhishthira.

Sigiriya (Lion Rock) "is famous for its palace ruins on top of a massive 200 meter high rock surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs and other structures. The rock itself is a lava plug left over from an ancient long extinct volcano." (quote from Wikitravel.com). The complex around the rock and on the summit was built in the 5th century, to serve as a capital, but soon after that Anuradhapura was restored as Sri Lanka's capital and Sigiriya was used as Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Sigiriya is inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the most visited place in Sri Lanka. In the second part of the video you will see another impressive rock in the vicinity - Pidurangala - and views from its top to Sigirija. Recorded January 2016 in 4K (Ult...

Driftwood VLOG Sri Lanka Sigiriya is one of the main sights in Sri Lanka and like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa part of the cultural Golden Tringle. It is near the city of Dambulla pretty much in the middle of Sri Lanka. It is easy to get there by bus from Dambulla which costs around 30 cent (LKR40) or you can book a TukTuk for the whole trip which will cost you around 10 Euros (LKR1600). The last bus back is around five and we had started our journey late so we decided to take a tuktuk. The tourist tuktuks are not only more expensive but also the drivers are not necessarily the friendliest so be sure to ask around. We found such an amazing guide Shan! He was the sweetest man and very happy that he got the chance to drive us to Sigiriya. We decided to not actually climb up Sigirya, but th...

Take a tour of Lion Rock of Sigiriya in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. One of the most remarkable fortresses in the world, visible above trees and buildings for miles around, is in Sri Lanka. This is Lion Rock, which once had a carved lion guarding the stairs, the paws of which are still visible. The stairwell leading up the rock has ancient painted murals, many featuring images of beautiful women. These frescoes date back many centuries and were, at one time, part of a much larger display covering hundreds of feet. On top of the Lion Rock are the remains of the fortress palace that once stood there overlooking the area. Surrounding Lion Rock are several beautiful gardens including a water garden, rock gar...
For my forth country of the year, I flew over to Sri Lanka, starting in the capital, Colombo. After a day on the road, I found myself in the stunning surroundings of Dambulla, where I wasted no time in trekking the Sri Lankan jungle. We then spent some time in Sigiriya, relaxing in the Jetwing hotel and seeing elephants on safari! After another long journey up to the North of the country, we spent a week on the beaches of Trincomalee, where we saw dolphins, whales and I indulged in a spot of jetskiing. But before going home, I had to experience one of the most famous Sri Lankan delicacies, it's tea, in Kandy. Our hotel overlooks what our tour guide calls, “the eighth wonder of the world”. Sirigiya Rock Fortress is a world heritage site, built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. It is nicknamed the ‘Lion Rock’, and rising 200 meters from the jungle, it comes at no surprise that people travel from far and wide to climb it. Once upon a time, King Kashyapa chose to build his palace upon the fortress, which was surrounded by a moat, rampart, and gardens. He also chose to decorate it’s sides with colourful frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens of Sigiriya’. People who would visit these frescoes would then write on ‘The Wall of Mirrors’, poems and sonnets of the beauty their have just witnessed. After the King’s passing, the palace and grounds were deserted and later used as a Buddhist monastery until ...
