A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

It is the sole home of the Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) and is considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its supported species. The ecosystem of Gir, with its diverse flora and fauna, is protected as a result of the efforts of the government forest department, wildlife activists and NGOs. The forest area of Gir were the hunting grounds of the Nawabs of Junagadh. However, faced with a drastic drop in the lion population in Gir, Nawab Sir Muhammad Rasul Khanji Babi declared Gir as a "protected" area in 1900. His son, Nawab Muhammad Mahabat Khan III later assisted in the conservation of the lions whose population had plummeted to only 20 through slaughter for trophy hunting.

the only home of asiatic lions in gir forest and Incredibly real hero is tracker Ibrahim, muhammad and murad If you've never seen lions in the wild, it's quite something to be less than six feet away from one. If you have seen lions in the wild, then to see them crouch, stalk and get into the hunt is like watching poetry in motion. The big cat trail made it's second stop at Gir. That left Sahana and me to make the long journey to Junagadh, so we could connect to the last home of the Asiatic Lions (Panthera Leo Persica). The next morning we were on safari. Gir has a clearly demarcated tourism zone that has 8 separate routes. This is a small section of the 1412 sq km forest, and that affords the animals a really large inviolate area. Unabashedly so, we had our eyes set on lion sightings. ...

When i go for safari at gir, it was an amazing experience recorded. There where 11+ lioness with family hunting cow.
Tidvis fanns bara c:a 20 individer kvar. Efter inrättandet av nationalparken Gir Forest i Indien återhämtade sig populationen och i dag lever c:a 500 lejon vilt i Girskogen.

Pictures : http://trainjourneysofnatarajan.blogspot.in/2015/07/a-short-and-sweet-journey-through-gir.html June 2015 A short ride to Talala through the Gir region of Gujarat !! One of the beautiful journeys that i have undertaken in recent times. We start of in Junagadh, a quiet little town with some historical background. The line passes close to roads and houses here, wonder how BG will come up here ( Hope it doesn't ). We then pass along the Girnar Hills for some distance. The route after that dries up untill we enter Gir forest. The train slows passes through the forest area to prevent any animal run over. Lions are common in this forest and we were lucky enough only to see foot prints and the real lions itself. We arrive at Talala to end the journey. Will share the day at Talala vide...
