Saranno pure volatili, ma nel corso dei millenni sono riusciti a imprimere una torsione di una sessantina di gradi a un intero pianeta. Parliamo dei ghiacci di Plutone - ghiacci d’azoto, ghiacci di metano, ghiacci di monossido di carbonio - che, accumulandosi all’interno di Sputnik Planitia (il lobo sinistro del cuore del pianeta nano, segno d’un antico impatto, probabilmente con una cometa), ne hanno causato il riorientamento sia lungo l’asse di rotazione sia rispetto a quello orbitale.
La forza che sta dietro a questa torsione planetaria è quella mareale, e in particolare l’interazione gravitazionale fra Plutone e la sua grande luna Caronte. Lo mostrano due studi pubblicati oggi su Nature, guidati uno da James Keane dell’Università dell’Arizona l’altro da Francis Nimmo dell’Università della California a Santa Cruz, avanzando anche l’ipotesi che nelle profondità di Plutone si nasconda un oceano sotterraneo, fonte dei ghiacci volatili, e che il processo di riorientamento del pianeta possa essere tutt’ora in corso.

El cráter lleno de nitrógeno congelado que se ubica en esa zona con forma de corazón es tan denso que el planeta enano se ha inclinado sobre su propio eje, cambiando de orientación.
En 2015 la sonda de la NASA New Horizons sorprendió al mundo con la primera imagen en alta definición de Plutón, en la que se veía que el planeta enano tenía una especie de corazón de un lado. Ahora, los astrónomos han comprendido que este descubrimiento es el responsable de los últimos cambios que ha sufrido el planeta.
El 'corazón', que posee una región conocida como Tombaugh Regio, es un cráter lleno de nitrógeno congelado que se ha convertido en planicie. De acuerdo con información publicada por la revista 'New Scientist', esa zona es tan densa que el planeta enano se ha inclinado sobre su propio eje, cambiando de orientación.
Según los científicos, dicho cambio tiene dos posibles explicaciones. De acuerdo con la primera teoría, el 'corazón' está anclado a Caronte, el satélite más grande del planeta, y la fuerza de gravedad de este último produce la inclinación.
La segunda teoría, apoyada por Francis Nimmo de la Universidad de California (EE.UU.), sostiene que en el cráter de Tombaugh Regio, aparte de nitrógeno también hay agua, lo que explica el peso y la densidad de la región.

Francis Nimmo
Francis Nimmo is a Planetary Science Associate Professor at the University of California Santa Cruz.
Biography
Education
Nimmo attended Wolverhampton Grammar School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Geological Sciences from Cambridge University in 1993 and completed his Ph.D. on Volcanism and Tectonics on Venus from Cambridge in 1996.
Career
His research focuses on the origin and evolution of solid body surfaces and interiors from observations and geophysical modelling. Some of his research achievements include his showing that a giant impact could have generated the Martian hemispheric dichotomy, identification of shear-heating as an important process on Enceladus, Europa and Triton and the explanation of the link between plate tectonics and dynamo activity on Mars and Venus. Nimmo received the Harold C. Urey Prize and the James B. Macelwane Medal in 2007.

Saranno pure volatili, ma nel corso dei millenni sono riusciti a imprimere una torsione di una sessantina di gradi a un intero pianeta. Parliamo dei ghiacci di Plutone - ghiacci d’azoto, ghiacci di metano, ghiacci di monossido di carbonio - che, accumulandosi all’interno di Sputnik Planitia (il lobo sinistro del cuore del pianeta nano, segno d’un antico impatto, probabilmente con una cometa), ne hanno causato il riorientamento sia lungo l’asse di rotazione sia rispetto a quello orbitale.
La forza che sta dietro a questa torsione planetaria è quella mareale, e in particolare l’interazione gravitazionale fra Plutone e la sua grande luna Caronte. Lo mostrano due studi pubblicati oggi su Nature, guidati uno da James Keane dell’Università dell’Arizona l’altro da Francis Nimmo dell’Università della California a Santa Cruz, avanzando anche l’ipotesi che nelle profondità di Plutone si nasconda un oceano sotterraneo, fonte dei ghiacci volatili, e che il processo di riorientamento del pianeta possa essere tutt’ora in corso.

El cráter lleno de nitrógeno congelado que se ubica en esa zona con forma de corazón es tan denso que el planeta enano se ha inclinado sobre su propio eje, cambiando de orientación.
En 2015 la sonda de la NASA New Horizons sorprendió al mundo con la primera imagen en alta definición de Plutón, en la que se veía que el planeta enano tenía una especie de corazón de un lado. Ahora, los astrónomos han comprendido que este descubrimiento es el responsable de los últimos cambios que ha sufrido el planeta.
El 'corazón', que posee una región conocida como Tombaugh Regio, es un cráter lleno de nitrógeno congelado que se ha convertido en planicie. De acuerdo con información publicada por la revista 'New Scientist', esa zona es tan densa que el planeta enano se ha inclinado sobre su propio eje, cambiando de orientación.
Según los científicos, dicho cambio tiene dos posibles explicaciones. De acuerdo con la primera teoría, el 'corazón' está anclado a Caronte, el satélite más grande del planeta, y la fuerza de gravedad de este último produce la inclinación.
La segunda teoría, apoyada por Francis Nimmo de la Universidad de California (EE.UU.), sostiene que en el cráter de Tombaugh Regio, aparte de nitrógeno también hay agua, lo que explica el peso y la densidad de la región.

Saranno pure volatili, ma nel corso dei millenni sono riusciti a imprimere una torsione di una sessantina di gradi a un intero pianeta. Parliamo dei ghiacci di Plutone - ghiacci d’azoto, ghiacci di metano, ghiacci di monossido di carbonio - che, accumulandosi all’interno di Sputnik Planitia (il lobo sinistro del cuore del pianeta nano, segno d’un antico impatto, probabilmente con una cometa), ne hanno causato il riorientamento sia lungo l’asse di rotazione sia rispetto a quello orbitale.
La forza che sta dietro a questa torsione planetaria è quella mareale, e in particolare l’interazione gravitazionale fra Plutone e la sua grande luna Caronte. Lo mostrano due studi pubblicati oggi su Nature, guidati uno da James Keane dell’Università dell’Arizona l’altro da Francis Nimmo dell’Università della California a Santa Cruz, avanzando anche l’ipotesi che nelle profondità di Plutone si nasconda un oceano sotterraneo, fonte dei ghiacci volatili, e che il processo di riorientamento del pianeta possa essere tutt’ora in corso.

En 2015 la sonda de la NASA New Horizons sorprendió al mundo con la primera imagen en alta definición de Plutón, en la que se veía que el planeta enano tenía una especie de corazón de un lado. Ahora, los astrónomos han comprendido que este descubrimiento es el responsable de los últimos cambios que ha sufrido el planeta.
El 'corazón', que posee una región conocida como Tombaugh Regio, es un cráter lleno de nitrógeno congelado que se ha convertido en planicie. De acuerdo con información publicada por la revista 'New Scientist', esa zona es tan densa que el planeta enano se ha inclinado sobre su propio eje, cambiando de orientación.
Según los científicos, dicho cambio tiene dos posibles explicaciones. De acuerdo con la primera teoría, el 'corazón' está anclado a Caronte, el satélite más grande del planeta, y la fuerza de gravedad de este último produce la inclinación.
