The Communist Party of Ireland is an all-Ireland Marxist party founded in 1933. Its aim is to win the support of the majority of the Irish people for ending the capitalist system and for building socialism—a social system in which the means of production, distribution and exchange are publicly owned and utilised for the benefit of the whole people.

The ASTI dispute: A teacher’s view
I am a teacher in my third year of teaching after receiving my postgraduate diploma in education (formerly the higher diploma in education) in 2013. From the outset it was difficult to find work in any school. I spent my first two years in schools where I had temporary contracts, not being paid for holidays—including those magical “three months’ holidays.” When I did have regular work it was not the full twenty-two hours weekly class time; a lot of the time I would wait for calls in the morning to come into a school as a substitute teacher. Working people must continue to push forward on water ownership The CPI welcomes today’s announcement [8 November] by Fianna Fáil that they would support the holding of a referendum to put public ownership and control of water in the Constitution of Ireland. Study circles

The CPI will begin its winter study circle on Tuesday 8 November. The circle will begin with two important works by Marx and Engels, Wage Labour and Capital and Value, Price and Profit. These will form the basis for the study circle’s reading of Capital (volume 1), beginning some time after Christmas. The separate study circle reading Imperialism in the 21st Century by John Smith will also begin shortly. Both circles meet in Connolly House (43 East Essex Street).

Statement on debt Reports in the media confirm that the state has paid more than €40 billion (€40,000,000,000) in interest on the bank bail-out in the last five years—almost the same amount as the bank bail-out itself, the CPI says in a statement. This confirms what the party has been saying since the banks were bailed out. Rotten to the core The EU Commission has ordered Apple to pay €13 billion in back tax to the Irish state. This windfall tax should be put immediately into the National Pension Fund to guarantee future workers’ pensions, the CPI says in a statement.
