The Standing Rock Indian Reservation is a Lakota, Yanktonai and Dakota Indian reservation in North Dakota and South Dakota in the United States. The sixth-largest reservation in land area in the United States, it comprises all of Sioux County, North Dakota, and all of Corson County, South Dakota, plus slivers of northern Dewey and Ziebach counties in South Dakota, along their northern county lines at Highway 20.
The reservation has a land area of 9,251.2 square kilometers (3,571.9 sq mi) and a population of 8,250 as of the 2000 census. The largest communities on the reservation are Fort Yates, Cannon Ball and McLaughlin. Other communities within the reservation include: Wakpala, Little Eagle, Bullhead, Porcupine, Kenel, McIntosh, Morristown, Selfridge, Solen.
The Yanktonai and Dakota live in North Dakota; the Lakota live in South Dakota. The Upper Yanktonai people used a language called Ihanktonwana, which translates as "Little End Village." The Lower Yanktonai were called Hunkpatina in their language, meaning "Campers at the Horn" or "End of the Camping Circle". Thunder Butte, a prominent landmark, is along the border between the Standing Rock Reservation and the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. The Cheyenne River Lakota Nation were a nomadic people who lived in teepees year round. Their Plains Indian culture was based strongly upon horses and buffalo.
North Dakota (pronunciation: i/ˌnɔːrθ dəˈkoʊtə/; locally [ˌno̞ɹθ dəˈko̞ɾə]) is the 39th state of the United States, having been admitted to the union on November 2, 1889.
It is located in the Upper Midwestern region of the United States, bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the north, the states of Minnesota to the east, South Dakota to the south, and Montana to the west. The state capital is Bismarck, and the largest city is Fargo. North Dakota is the 19th most extensive but the 4th least populous and the 4th least densely populated of the 50 United States.
North Dakota has weathered the Great Recession of the early 21st century with a boom in natural resources, particularly a boom in oil extraction from the Bakken formation, which lies beneath the northwestern part of the state. The development has driven strong job and population growth, and low unemployment.
North Dakota is located in the U.S. region known as the Great Plains. The state shares the Red River of the North with Minnesota on the east; South Dakota is to the south, Montana is to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba are north. North Dakota is situated near the middle of North America with a stone marker in Rugby, North Dakota marking the "Geographic Center of the North American Continent". With an area of 70,762 square miles (183,273 km2), North Dakota is the 19th largest state.

Police and National Guard troops arrested more than 140 protesters near a construction site Thursday. The Standing Rock Sioux have sued to stop the pipeline from crossing under the Missouri River next to their reservation, claiming the project would destroy sacred sites and threaten the water supply. In North Dakota, thousands of Native Americans and allies have joined the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in a fight to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline that they say threatens water and sacred land. They call themselves water protectors, not protesters, and they have built a nonviolent resistance movement based in ceremony. Here, in scenes from Standing Rock and at a demonstration in nearby Bismarck, we meet people from all over the world who have come to support and help the camp prepare for winter. Protestors of the North Dakota pipeline celebrated after the Department of Justice temporarily halted the project in federal jurisdictions last Friday. But while some equipment sits idle, construction in other areas continues. William Brangham visits the Standing Rock Reservation, where more than 100 Native American tribes have gathered, to recap a week of protests.
Buffalo appear at standing rock amidst the ongoing protest against North Dakota Pipeline. Native indian Indegenous people and activists were highly encouraged after wild Buffalo herd sighting. Native Americans maintain a spiritual tradition with bison, believing that as long as buffalo — a gift from the Great Spirit — roam free and as long as the herds are bountiful, the sovereignty of indigenous people would remain strong. Indigenous culture honors American bison (known as Tatanka Oyate, or Buffalo Nation) as a symbol of sacrifice, as the bison give their lives to provide food, shelter, and clothing through the use of their meat and their hides. Native Americans attempting to stop a pipeline from being built on their land and water just got assistance from a large herd of wild buffalo....

Follow us on Facebook for more: http://fb.com/wearethemedia2016 ⛔ As of 3pm construction for the North Dakota Access Pipeline was halted today through nonviolent direct action and mass assembly from peaceful and united water protectors from across the nation! Unfortunately, this was not before violence broke out as it was also a full on assault from DAPL. They hired their own security team to confront protectors using attack dogs, pepperspray, horses and trucks to intimidate peaceful groups of men, women and children. Altogether 6 people were bitten by dogs including a pregnant woman and a young girl who has been hospitalized, 30 or more were peppersprayed and many more were physically assaulted/shoved/pinned. A very insightful interview with BJ & Wilma just outside the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. The main focus of the interview is the protection of water . Allison Renville served as a delegate for Bernie Sanders representing South Dakota. She's also an activist with Our Revolution, a candidate for public office, . Dakota Access Pipeline protests continue as pipeline opposition stiffens. Water Defenders seeking to protect their land peaceful protested at Standing Rock . While the Mainstream Media continues to ignore the movement to protect water & stop the DAPL, we continue in our collective efforts of getting the truth out.
