Nature notes
There are more blackbirds about than there were in summer, because Norwegian and Swedish blackbirds have been coming into Britain. They migrate at night, and occasionally people along the east side of Britain find little, tired flocks of blackbirds resting in a field or hedge in the morning. Small parties of blackbirds seen skirmishing in the treetops may also be immigrants. Eventually they spread through the country. However, the immigrants cannot be distinguished by their plumage from the half a million pairs of British blackbirds and their surviving offspring, most of which stay around the places where they had their nests in summer. Distinguishing offspring from parents is possible but becoming more difficult as the autumn months pass. The adult males are very black and glossy after moulting. Their sons leave the nest as brown birds but have now also become black, though they often keep a distinct tinge of brown on them in winter. First-winter females are all-brown like their mothers, but often a slightly paler shade of brown. derwent may
