The ubiquitous character actor joined host Jian Ghomeshi in Studio Q.
Maury Chaykin, the prolific and award-winning actor recently seen in the hit TV comedy Less Than Kind, has died.
The veteran actor died in Toronto early Tuesday, his 61st birthday, his agent Paul Hemrend told CBC News.
Chaykin, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to an American father and Canadian mother, studied drama at the State University of New York in Buffalo.
He moved to Toronto to join the theatre scene in the mid-1970s, and the city would remain his base for the rest of his life.
Ferne Downey, national president of the actors union ACTRA, hailed Chaykin for his contribution to Canadian film and TV on Tuesday.
"Maury was an infinitely gifted actor who has left us an incomparable body of work that will be cherished for many generations to come," she said.
"We will miss his passion for his craft and his love and commitment to building our Canadian industry."
A journeyman actor with more than 120 credits, Chaykin regularly appeared in the films of Atom Egoyan (Adoration, Where the Truth Lies, The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica, The Adjuster) and Don McKellar (Cooking with Stella, Blindness ).
Other prominent appearances include Whale Music, Dances with Wolves and TV film Canada's Sweetheart: The Saga of Hal C. Banks. He played the titular detective in a Nero Wolfe series and appeared in Entourage in a notable send-up of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
In Whale Music, based on the novel by Canadian Paul Quarrington, who died earlier this year, Chaykin played the washed-up rock star who spends his time mourning his dead brother (played by Paul Gross) and writing music for whales. That performance — part pathos, part comedy — earned him a Genie Award for best actor.
In an April interview on CBC's cultural affairs show Q, Chaykin said he didn't consider "character actor" a negative label.
"It's been a real blessing over the years," he said. "I don't know what to attribute it to, other than creative producers and directors who see different things in an actor. And they've seen different aspects of me.
"There have been attempts to typecast me. But I've been in control of that ... by protecting myself financially, so that I'm not in a position where I have to take the same kinds of gigs all the time. The word 'no' is my protection.
"But I've been so happy with the way things have panned out, and the kind of roles that I've been offered have been interesting to me and those are the ones that I accept," he said, listing roles such as Desmond Howl in Whale Music, Uncle Arthur in Diane Keaton's Unstrung Heroes and the wealthy entrepreneur in Egoyan's The Adjuster as his favourite roles.
He also earned Gemini Awards for his spots in La Femme Nikita in 1998 and CBC's At the Hotel in 2006.
Most recently, Chaykin starred as Sam Blecher, the driving-instructor father of the main character Sheldon Blecher, in the edgy, coming-of-age comedy Less Than Kind, produced by Mark McKinney.
"I'm having a great time," Chaykin said of the production, which he hailed as a "group of people who all love what they're doing."
Chaykin is survived by his wife, actress Susannah Hoffmann, and their daughter, Rose.

When sweet Northern college kid Bill (Ralph Macchio) and his buddy Stan (Mitchell Whitfield) are picked up and thrown into the slammer in a hick Southern town, at first it looks like no big deal. Then they are informed that they are accused of murder. Penniless and without a single friend in the area, Bill decides to call his goofy cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci), who has somehow recently become a lawyer. Full of family feeling and bravado, Vinny, who has never tried a criminal case in his short life as a lawyer, rides south to defend his trusting relative. He's an expert motormouth and street-level logician from the wilder reaches of metropolitan New York, complete with a thick accent and the attitude to go with it. Otherwise, he's much less well qualified than your average public defender. When he arrives on the scene with his equally brassy girlfriend Lisa (Marisa Tomei), Bill is fairly sure he's going to be sentenced to death. His buddy Stan is even less confident of his legal representative, if that's possible, and the first thing Vinny has to do is to regain the consent of his clients to represent them. The local judge doesn't seem any too sympathetic to Vinny's verbal shenanigans either, and even the most optimistic supporter of the boys would begin to have doubts at this point -- and Vinny's no exception. With the insistent moral encouragement of his girlfriend, Vinny somehow accomplishes the impossible and wins grudging (if very irritated) respect from all concerned, for once studying as if his life depended on it.

Maury Chaykin
Maury Alan Chaykin (July 27, 1949 – July 27, 2010) was an American-born Canadian actor, best known for his portrayal of detective Nero Wolfe, as well as for his work as a character actor in many films and television programs.
Personal life
Chaykin was born in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Irving J. Chaykin (1912–2007), was born in Brooklyn, and was a professor of accountancy at City College of New York. His mother, Clarice Chaykin (née Bloomfield, 1921–2012), was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but raised in Montreal, Quebec since the age of three. She graduated from Beth Israel Hospital nursing school in Newark, New Jersey. Chaykin's maternal uncle, George Bloomfield (1930–2011), was a veteran Canadian director, producer, writer and actor who directed Chaykin in a number of projects for film and television.
Raised in New York City, Chaykin studied drama at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. He subsequently moved to Toronto, Ontario, where he resided until his death. Chaykin's first marriage, to Canadian producer Ilana Frank, ended in divorce. He was subsequently married to Canadian actress Susannah Hoffmann, with whom he had one daughter, Rose. Best known for having played Jen Pringle in the Anne of Avonlea series, Hoffmann had a supporting role in a 2002 episode of the television series A Nero Wolfe Mystery, in which Chaykin starred.

Maury Chaykin, the prolific and award-winning actor recently seen in the hit TV comedy Less Than Kind, has died. The veteran actor died in Toronto early Tuesday, his 61st birthday, his agent Paul Hemrend told CBC News. Chaykin, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to an American father and Canadian mother, studied drama at the State University of New York in Buffalo. He moved to Toronto to join the theatre scene in the mid-1970s, and the city would remain his base for the rest of his life. Ferne Downey, national president of the actors union ACTRA, hailed Chaykin for his contribution to Canadian film and TV on Tuesday. The veteran actor died in Toronto early Tuesday, his 61st birthday, his agent Paul Hemrend told CBC News.
Chaykin, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to an American father and Canadian mother, studied drama at the State University of New York in Buffalo.
He moved to Toronto to join the theatre scene in the mid-1970s, and the city would remain his base for the rest of his life.
Ferne Downey, national president of the actors union ACTRA, hailed Chaykin for his contribution to Canadian film and TV on Tuesday.
"Maury was an infinitely gifted actor who has left us an incomparable body of work that will be cherished for many generations to come," she said.
"We will miss his passion for his craft and his love and commitment to building our Canadian industry."
A journeyman actor with more than 120 credits, Chaykin regularly appeared in the films of Atom Egoyan (Adoration, Where the Truth Lies, The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica, The Adjuster) and Don McKellar (Cooking with Stella, Blindness ).
Other prominent appearances include Whale Music, Dances with Wolves and TV film Canada's Sweetheart: The Saga of Hal C. Banks. He played the titular detective in a Nero Wolfe series and appeared in Entourage in a notable send-up of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
In Whale Music, based on the novel by Canadian Paul Quarrington, who died earlier this year, Chaykin played the washed-up rock star who spends his time mourning his dead brother (played by Paul Gross) and writing music for whales. That performance — part pathos, part comedy — earned him a Genie Award for best actor.
In an April interview on CBC's cultural affairs show Q, Chaykin said he didn't consider "character actor" a negative label.
"It's been a real blessing over the years," he said. "I don't know what to attribute it to, other than creative producers and directors who see different things in an actor. And they've seen different aspects of me.
"There have been attempts to typecast me. But I've been in control of that ... by protecting myself financially, so that I'm not in a position where I have to take the same kinds of gigs all the time. The word 'no' is my protection.
"But I've been so happy with the way things have panned out, and the kind of roles that I've been offered have been interesting to me and those are the ones that I accept," he said, listing roles such as Desmond Howl in Whale Music, Uncle Arthur in Diane Keaton's Unstrung Heroes and the wealthy entrepreneur in Egoyan's The Adjuster as his favourite roles.
He also earned Gemini Awards for his spots in La Femme Nikita in 1998 and CBC's At the Hotel in 2006.
Most recently, Chaykin starred as Sam Blecher, the driving-instructor father of the main character Sheldon Blecher, in the edgy, coming-of-age comedy Less Than Kind, produced by Mark McKinney.
"I'm having a great time," Chaykin said of the production, which he hailed as a "group of people who all love what they're doing."
Chaykin is survived by his wife, actress Susannah Hoffmann, and their daughter, Rose.

Penniless and without a single friend in the area, Bill decides to call his goofy cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci), who has somehow recently become a lawyer. Full of family feeling and bravado, Vinny, who has never tried a criminal case in his short life as a lawyer, rides south to defend his trusting relative. He's an expert motormouth and street-level logician from the wilder reaches of metropolitan New York, complete with a thick accent and the attitude to go with it. Otherwise, he's much less well qualified than your average public defender. When he arrives on the scene with his equally brassy girlfriend Lisa (Marisa Tomei), Bill is fairly sure he's going to be sentenced to death. His buddy Stan is even less confident of his legal representative, if that's possible, and the first thing Vinny has to do is to regain the consent of his clients to represent them. The local judge doesn't seem any too sympathetic to Vinny's verbal shenanigans either, and even the most optimistic supporter of the boys would begin to have doubts at this point -- and Vinny's no exception. With the insistent moral encouragement of his girlfriend, Vinny somehow accomplishes the impossible and wins grudging (if very irritated) respect from all concerned, for once studying as if his life depended on it.

"Barney's Version" is the warm, wise, and witty story of Barney Panofsky, (Paul Giamatti), a seemingly ordinary man who lives an extraordinary life. There is his first wife, Clara, (Rachelle Lefevre), a flame-haired, flagrantly unfaithful free sprit with whom Barney briefly lives la vie de Boheme in Rome. Regisseur, Hauptdarsteller und Koproduzent ist Kevin Costner. Das Drehbuch zu dem Western verfasste Michael Blake basierend auf dem von ihm stammenden, gleichnamigen Roman. Der Film wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet, so auch mit sieben Oscars und drei Golden Globes, die es unter anderem in der Kategorie Bester Film gab.

Der Film erzählt die Geschichte des Nordstaaten-Offiziers First Lieutenant John Dunbar, der 1863 im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg verletzt wird. In seiner Verzweiflung darüber, dass er wahrscheinlich sein Bein verlieren wird, versucht er, sich vom Feind erschießen zu lassen, um sich die Qualen einer Amputation zu ersparen, wird dabei aber unbeabsichtigt zum Helden. Statt der für einfache Soldaten üblichen primitiven medizinischen Behandlung wird er nun von einem gut ausgebildeten Offiziers-Leibarzt behandelt und sein Bein wird gerettet, da er einen Oberst beeindruckt hat. Zudem erhält er militärische Ehrungen und darf wählen, wo er eingesetzt werden will. Dunbar beschließt, den „Westen“ kennenzulernen und lässt sich auf einen entlegenen Außenposten im Indianergebiet (im heutigen South Dakota) versetzen. Er will den Westen noch einmal kennenlernen, bevor es ihn nicht mehr gibt. Er ahnt das Schicksal der Indianer und die zukünftige Entwicklung nach dem Bürgerkrieg in diesen Gebieten voraus.
Den Außenposten, Fort Sedgwick, findet er verlassen und vollkommen verwahrlost vor. Das Trinkwasser ist mit Tierkadavern verseucht. Trotzdem beschließt er – seinem Befehl folgend – zu bleiben. Er setzt den Posten wieder instand, entfernt die Kadaver aus dem Wasserreservoir und richtet sich häuslich ein. Dabei schließt Dunbar Freundschaft mit einem Wolf, der ihn regelmäßig besucht und sich allmählich von ihm zähmen lässt, und gibt ihm den Namen „Socke“ (aufgrund der Fellzeichnung sieht der Wolf aus, als würde er weiße Socken tragen). Es kommt zwar nicht zu Körperkontakten zwischen dem Wolf und Dunbar, aber sie spielen beide wiederholt miteinander und der Wolf frisst ihm am Ende aus der Hand.

Der mit dem Wolf tanzt (Originaltitel: Dances with Wolves, deutsch etwa „[Er] Tanzt mit Wölfen“) ist ein US-amerikanischer Kino-Spielfilm von 1990. Regisseur, Hauptdarsteller und Koproduzent ist Kevin Costner. Das Drehbuch zu dem Western verfasste Michael Blake basierend auf dem von ihm stammenden, gleichnamigen Roman. Der Film wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet, so auch mit sieben Oscars und drei Golden Globes, die es unter anderem in der Kategorie Bester Film gab.
Der Film spielt zur Zeit des amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges und erzählt von einem Offizier, der, auf seinem Posten im Indianergebiet auf Verstärkung wartend, eine Freundschaft mit Indianern aufbaut und dabei deren Leben und Kultur kennenlernt.

Maury Chaykin, the prolific and award-winning actor recently seen in the hit TV comedy Less Than Kind, has died. The veteran actor died in Toronto early Tuesday, his 61st birthday, his agent Paul Hemrend told CBC News. Chaykin, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to an American father and Canadian mother, studied drama at the State University of New York in Buffalo. He moved to Toronto to join the theatre scene in the mid-1970s, and the city would remain his base for the rest of his life. A journeyman actor with more than 120 credits, Chaykin regularly appeared in the films of Atom Egoyan (Adoration, Where the Truth Lies, The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica, The Adjuster) and Don McKellar (Cooking with Stella, Blindness ).
Other prominent appearances include Whale Music, Dances with Wolves and TV film Canada's Sweetheart: The Saga of Hal C. Banks. He played the titular detective in a Nero Wolfe series and appeared in Entourage in a notable send-up of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
In Whale Music, based on the novel by Canadian Paul Quarrington, who died earlier this year, Chaykin played the washed-up rock star who spends his time mourning his dead brother (played by Paul Gross) and writing music for whales. That performance — part pathos, part comedy — earned him a Genie Award for best actor.
In an April interview on CBC's cultural affairs show Q, Chaykin said he didn't consider "character actor" a negative label.
"It's been a real blessing over the years," he said. "I don't know what to attribute it to, other than creative producers and directors who see different things in an actor. And they've seen different aspects of me.
"There have been attempts to typecast me. But I've been in control of that ... by protecting myself financially, so that I'm not in a position where I have to take the same kinds of gigs all the time. The word 'no' is my protection.
"But I've been so happy with the way things have panned out, and the kind of roles that I've been offered have been interesting to me and those are the ones that I accept," he said, listing roles such as Desmond Howl in Whale Music, Uncle Arthur in Diane Keaton's Unstrung Heroes and the wealthy entrepreneur in Egoyan's The Adjuster as his favourite roles.
He also earned Gemini Awards for his spots in La Femme Nikita in 1998 and CBC's At the Hotel in 2006.
Most recently, Chaykin starred as Sam Blecher, the driving-instructor father of the main character Sheldon Blecher, in the edgy, coming-of-age comedy Less Than Kind, produced by Mark McKinney.
"I'm having a great time," Chaykin said of the production, which he hailed as a "group of people who all love what they're doing."
Chaykin is survived by his wife, actress Susannah Hoffmann, and their daughter, Rose.

In Whale Music, based on the novel by Canadian Paul Quarrington, who died earlier this year, Chaykin played the washed-up rock star who spends his time mourning his dead brother (played by Paul Gross) and writing music for whales. That performance — part pathos, part comedy — earned him a Genie Award for best actor.
In an April interview on CBC's cultural affairs show Q, Chaykin said he didn't consider "character actor" a negative label.
"It's been a real blessing over the years," he said. "I don't know what to attribute it to, other than creative producers and directors who see different things in an actor. And they've seen different aspects of me.
"There have been attempts to typecast me. But I've been in control of that ... by protecting myself financially, so that I'm not in a position where I have to take the same kinds of gigs all the time. The word 'no' is my protection.
"But I've been so happy with the way things have panned out, and the kind of roles that I've been offered have been interesting to me and those are the ones that I accept," he said, listing roles such as Desmond Howl in Whale Music, Uncle Arthur in Diane Keaton's Unstrung Heroes and the wealthy entrepreneur in Egoyan's The Adjuster as his favourite roles.
He also earned Gemini Awards for his spots in La Femme Nikita in 1998 and CBC's At the Hotel in 2006.
Most recently, Chaykin starred as Sam Blecher, the driving-instructor father of the main character Sheldon Blecher, in the edgy, coming-of-age comedy Less Than Kind, produced by Mark McKinney.
"I'm having a great time," Chaykin said of the production, which he hailed as a "group of people who all love what they're doing."
Chaykin is survived by his wife, actress Susannah Hoffmann, and their daughter, Rose.
