The legendary frontman of Alice in Chains had a voice that could be described with two adjectives: 'snarly' and 'powerful'.
Although possessing a dark tenor, Layne Staley was able to distort his voice extremely well, which, combined with low-larynx mid-range singing and the usage of twang, resulted in his unique, almost baritone-like vocal style. He was known to be a fairly tasteful singer, rarely singing beyond his comfort rare. Thanks to his powerful chest range, his money notes generally lied around the G♯4-B♭4-area, though his lethal drug addiction radically weakened his vocal abilities during the later days of his career. Even then, he was able to perform like a professional and sing great performances, whence we remember his legacy from.
1. 0:00 - Lower range - A very strong B♭2 from a live version of "Bleed the Freak". (Seattle, 1990)
2. 0:10 - A tad weaker G♯2 from a live version of "Junkhead". (Singles Movie Premiere, 1992)
3. 0:16 - A rattling G♯2 from the classic Unplugged-performance of "Sludge Factory", the note is much more audible here than on the studio version.
4. 0:20 - The weird ending of the studio version, lots of strange lower singing/speaking around F2-G♯2-area.
5. 0:34 - A sung E♭2 from "Frogs, Layne's definitely pushing his lower limit here; Though still a great singer, his voice had significantly weakened around this point, thanks to the long-term drug abuse.
6. 0:41 - Extremely weird backing vocals from "A Little Bitter" - The clip bottoms around E♭2 too.
7. 0:55 - A vocal fry G1 from the demo version of "Rooster".
8. 0:58 - Higher range - Amazing G♯4s from "Confusion".
9. 1:25 - Great singing from the finale off "I Stay Away": Layne sustains baritone-like, powerfully distorted F♯4s, sliding up to G♯s both times as well.
10. 1:46 - Another G♯4, this time from "Sunshine".
11. 1:54 - A mindblowing note around the same pitch from the demo version of "Junkhead" - Much better than the 'official' studio version! (Also has way better vocal harmonies)
12. 2:07 - A chesty A4 from the cover of Bob Dylan's "Ring Them Bells" together with Heart - Raw power!
13. 2:11 - Huge A4s from the power-chorus of "Rain When I Die", Alice in Chains really knew how to tailor fitting choruses for their songs.
14. 2:27 - A snarly B♭4 from "Real Thing".
15. 2:34 - Strong B♭4s from "I Can't Remember", Layne also sings a falsetto F♯5 at the end.
16. 2:54 - Sung melody B♭s from "God Smack".
17. 3:08 - The classic wailed B♭4s from the final chorus of the extremely demanding "Man in the Box" - The volume of the backing music has been decreased so that the powerful vocals can be heard even better!
18. 3:33 - Of all the live versions I've heard, this is definitely the best live vocal performance of the said song! Layne nails the notes with power and passion like a true pro - Notice how he centers the highs on the 'ah' vowel, resulting in more powerful, open sound. (The Marquee, Dallas, 1990)
19. 3:57 - Blistering B♭4s from Layne's best performance, the amazing vocal tour de force "Love, Hate Love".
20. 4:25 - Beautiful singing from "Wake Up": a surprisingly relaxed B4 followed by few A4s. This song showcases Layne's naturally bright tenor very well!
21. 4:40 - A brief B4 followed by some very resonant G♯s from "Don't Follow".
22. 5:03 - A B♭4 from "Junkhead", also touches on B briefly.
23. 5:10 - A sung B4 from "Rooster".
24. 5:15 - A sustained tenor high C (C5) from "Ya Yeah Ya", a rather clumsy glam metal "rocker" before the formation of the 'classic' Alice in Chains; Layne's vocal style was very different back then.
25. 5:19 - What's this!? A monstrous C5 from a LIVE performance of the hilarious "Queen of the Rodeo". (The Marquee, Dallas, 1990)
26. 5:27 - We are making a big leap now... Layne generally stayed in his comfort area during the Alice in Chains-years, and rarely sang up into the 5th octave, even though he was able to; Here's an E♭5 from "Fat Girls", another questionable tune from the glam metal years - Layne sounds like Vince Neil on this song.
27. 5:31 - A screamed harmony E♭5 from "Bleed the Freak".
28. 5:38 - Falsetto E♭5s from the demo version of "Rooster" - Much better sound than on the final version.
29. 6:03 - D5s and an F from "Over the Edge".
30. 6:19 - Gritty E♭s and an F♯ from "I Can't Have You Blues" - The highest instance of Layne belting it out like that post-80's.
31. 6:46 - Oh god, close your eyes before the unpredictable horror - Glammed-up Layne from the mid-80's appears in an extremely obscure, cheesy b-movie called Father Rock. I'm not sure whether the vocals are him or not, but I'm including the clip nonetheless: strong and impressive E5s, F♯s and even harmony B♭s!
32. 7:06 - A very high whistle scream from the late 80's, an A6, hit during the live cover of "False Alarm", originally by Armored Saint.

(The Marquee, Dallas, 1990) 19. 3:57 - Blistering B♭4s from Layne's best performance, the amazing vocal tour de force "Love, Hate Love". 20. 4:25 - Beautiful singing from "Wake Up": a surprisingly relaxed B4 followed by few A4s. This song showcases Layne's naturally bright tenor very well! 21. 4:40 - A brief B4 followed by some very resonant G♯s from "Don't Follow". 22. 5:03 - A B♭4 from "Junkhead", also touches on B briefly. 23. 5:10 - A sung B4 from "Rooster". 24. 5:15 - A sustained tenor high C (C5) from "Ya Yeah Ya", a rather clumsy glam metal "rocker" before the formation of the 'classic' Alice in Chains; Layne's vocal style was very different back then. 25. 5:19 - What's this!? The Vocal Range of Layne Staley
The legendary frontman of Alice in Chains had a voice that could be described with two adjectives: 'snarly' and 'powerful'. Although possessing a dark tenor, Layne Staley was able to distort his voice extremely well, which, combined with low-larynx mid-range singing and the usage of twang, resulted in his unique, almost baritone-like vocal style. He was known to be a fairly tasteful singer, rarely singing beyond his comfort rare. Thanks to his powerful chest range, his money notes generally lied around the G♯4-B♭4-area, though his lethal drug addiction radically weakened his vocal abilities during the later days of his career. The legendary frontman of Alice in Chains had a voice that could be described with two adjectives: 'snarly' and 'powerful'.
Although possessing a dark tenor, Layne Staley was able to distort his voice extremely well, which, combined with low-larynx mid-range singing and the usage of twang, resulted in his unique, almost baritone-like vocal style. He was known to be a fairly tasteful singer, rarely singing beyond his comfort rare. Thanks to his powerful chest range, his money notes generally lied around the G♯4-B♭4-area, though his lethal drug addiction radically weakened his vocal abilities during the later days of his career. Even then, he was able to perform like a professional and sing great performances, whence we remember his legacy from.
1. 0:00 - Lower range - A very strong B♭2 from a live version of "Bleed the Freak". (Seattle, 1990)
2. 0:10 - A tad weaker G♯2 from a live version of "Junkhead". (Singles Movie Premiere, 1992)
3. 0:16 - A rattling G♯2 from the classic Unplugged-performance of "Sludge Factory", the note is much more audible here than on the studio version.
4. 0:20 - The weird ending of the studio version, lots of strange lower singing/speaking around F2-G♯2-area.
5. 0:34 - A sung E♭2 from "Frogs, Layne's definitely pushing his lower limit here; Though still a great singer, his voice had significantly weakened around this point, thanks to the long-term drug abuse.
6. 0:41 - Extremely weird backing vocals from "A Little Bitter" - The clip bottoms around E♭2 too.
7. 0:55 - A vocal fry G1 from the demo version of "Rooster".
8. 0:58 - Higher range - Amazing G♯4s from "Confusion".
9. 1:25 - Great singing from the finale off "I Stay Away": Layne sustains baritone-like, powerfully distorted F♯4s, sliding up to G♯s both times as well.
10. 1:46 - Another G♯4, this time from "Sunshine".
11. 1:54 - A mindblowing note around the same pitch from the demo version of "Junkhead" - Much better than the 'official' studio version! (Also has way better vocal harmonies)
12. 2:07 - A chesty A4 from the cover of Bob Dylan's "Ring Them Bells" together with Heart - Raw power!
13. 2:11 - Huge A4s from the power-chorus of "Rain When I Die", Alice in Chains really knew how to tailor fitting choruses for their songs.
14. 2:27 - A snarly B♭4 from "Real Thing".
15. 2:34 - Strong B♭4s from "I Can't Remember", Layne also sings a falsetto F♯5 at the end.
16. 2:54 - Sung melody B♭s from "God Smack".
17. 3:08 - The classic wailed B♭4s from the final chorus of the extremely demanding "Man in the Box" - The volume of the backing music has been decreased so that the powerful vocals can be heard even better!
18. 3:33 - Of all the live versions I've heard, this is definitely the best live vocal performance of the said song! Layne nails the notes with power and passion like a true pro - Notice how he centers the highs on the 'ah' vowel, resulting in more powerful, open sound. (The Marquee, Dallas, 1990)
19. 3:57 - Blistering B♭4s from Layne's best performance, the amazing vocal tour de force "Love, Hate Love".
20. 4:25 - Beautiful singing from "Wake Up": a surprisingly relaxed B4 followed by few A4s. This song showcases Layne's naturally bright tenor very well!
21. 4:40 - A brief B4 followed by some very resonant G♯s from "Don't Follow".
22. 5:03 - A B♭4 from "Junkhead", also touches on B briefly.
23. 5:10 - A sung B4 from "Rooster".
24. 5:15 - A sustained tenor high C (C5) from "Ya Yeah Ya", a rather clumsy glam metal "rocker" before the formation of the 'classic' Alice in Chains; Layne's vocal style was very different back then.
25. 5:19 - What's this!? A monstrous C5 from a LIVE performance of the hilarious "Queen of the Rodeo". (The Marquee, Dallas, 1990)
26. 5:27 - We are making a big leap now... Layne generally stayed in his comfort area during the Alice in Chains-years, and rarely sang up into the 5th octave, even though he was able to; Here's an E♭5 from "Fat Girls", another questionable tune from the glam metal years - Layne sounds like Vince Neil on this song.
27. 5:31 - A screamed harmony E♭5 from "Bleed the Freak".
28. 5:38 - Falsetto E♭5s from the demo version of "Rooster" - Much better sound than on the final version.
29. 6:03 - D5s and an F from "Over the Edge".
30. 6:19 - Gritty E♭s and an F♯ from "I Can't Have You Blues" - The highest instance of Layne belting it out like that post-80's.
31. 6:46 - Oh god, close your eyes before the unpredictable horror - Glammed-up Layne from the mid-80's appears in an extremely obscure, cheesy b-movie called Father Rock. I'm not sure whether the vocals are him or not, but I'm including the clip nonetheless: strong and impressive E5s, F♯s and even harmony B♭s!
