About Narooma

Stayz gives you a great variety of accommodation options for your stay in Narooma South Coast, including holiday rental houses and more.

If you're looking for accommodation online in South Coast NSW, look no further!

Narooma: The Ocean’s Never Far

Narooma means “clear blue water” in local Aboriginal language. As you can imagine, much of the activity in the small Far South Coast town revolves around the ocean.

Dive with fur seals and snorkel with schools of tropical fish. Lounge on golden beaches and wander along coastal trails. You’ll never be far from the water. Even Narooma’s clifftop golf course is so close to the sea that you will be able to hear the waves crash as you play.

Holiday rentals in Narooma, NSW, range from apartments across from the golf course to family homes with views of the bay.

Narooma Beaches and Picnic Spots

A series of beaches lines Narooma’s coast, from safe swimming beaches to more agitated surf beaches. Families with small children may opt for an array of protected stretches of sand, such as Bar Beach, or Narooma’s main beach, both of which have naturally formed rock pools.

If you’re visiting Narooma to surf, hit up Dalmeny Beach or Potato Point. Travellers can also learn the craft at one of the nearby surf schools. Lessons take place off the more agitated beaches a few minutes from Narooma. Group and private lessons are available.

Sports and Recreation in Narooma

Narooma boasts an award-winning golf course, ranked 68th out of the top 100 courses in Australia. The golf club’s cliffside location adds oceanfront ambiance to its 12 holes. Alternately, bring the whole family to Narooma Fitness and Cycles to play squash or do some rock climbing. On a rainy day, head to Narooma’s 50 m indoor pool.

Narooma is a hub for fishermen, with 5 public boat ramps and several fish cleaning areas in town. Cast your line off the beach or rocks for salmon and tailor, or do some reef fishing to reel in snapper. For day-long expeditions, hire a charter and go deep sea fishing.

Walking and Cycling Trails around Narooma

To stretch your legs and soak up the scenery, hit Narooma’s walking and cycling tracks.

Along Mill Bay Boardwalk, you might be able to observe seals and stingrays going about their business. The boardwalk connects with the 21 km Narooma to Dalmeny bike path. As you cycle, you will be privy to views of Wagonga Inlet, Mummaga Lake and uninterrupted ocean vistas. Stop to refuel at one of the seafood restaurants or cafes along the way.

Enjoy additional ocean views as you stroll amidst coastal vegetation on the sandy trail from Lake Brou to Potato Point. This track runs for 7 km (one way), winding past red sandy cliffs, glistening coastal lakes, headlands and untouched sections of beach.

If you would like to go walking and hiking with locals, look up the Dalmeny Narooma Bushwalkers’ schedule for free group walks.

Narooma Wildlife Observation

Montague Island, just 8 km from shore, is a sanctuary for Australia’s largest fur seal colony. You will also see little blue penguins and many other bird species. Whale watch in season or dolphin watch year-round. Guided island tours depart Narooma.

Narooma’s warm, clear waters are optimal for snorkelling and diving. In fact, diving with seals is one of the area’s highlights. The best time to do so is in September and October, when you might be accompanied by up to 100 of these creatures.

The whale watching season starts in June and wraps up in November. Whales come quite close to shore, on the search for krill. Pods of 10 whales, including orcas, often come very close to the boats.

Natural and Human History in Narooma

To get acquainted with the South Coast’s maritime history, visit Narooma’s Lighthouse Museum. Here, you will be able to see parts of the first lighthouse on Montague Island, including the original light, while learning about the area’s past.

If natural history is more up your alley, or if you’re simply looking for photo ops, spend some time at Wagonga Head’s Australia Rock. This rock has an opening naturally shaped like the Australian mainland. You can peer through it to see all of Narooma.

On the opposite end of Bar Beach are the Glasshouse Rocks, estimated to be at least 440 million years old. The rock formation gives the Great Ocean Road’s 12 Apostles a run for their money, in terms of being the most photographed rock formation in Australia.

Getting to Narooma

Narooma is about an 8-hour drive from Melbourne and a 4-hour drive from Sydney. If you don’t have access to a vehicle, take a combination of busses and trains, but journey time may double. The closest airport to Narooma is in Moruya, a 40-minute drive away, with direct flights from Sydney and Merimbula.
