Narooma means âclear blue waterâ in local Aboriginal language. As you can imagine, much of the activity in the small Far South Coast town revolves around the ocean.

Narooma is a hub for fishermen, with 5 public boat ramps and several fish cleaning areas in town. Cast your line off the beach or rocks for salmon and tailor, or do some reef fishing to reel in snapper. For day-long expeditions, hire a charter and go deep sea fishing.

Along Mill Bay Boardwalk, you might be able to observe seals and stingrays going about their business. The boardwalk connects with the 21 km Narooma to Dalmeny bike path. As you cycle, you will be privy to views of Wagonga Inlet, Mummaga Lake and uninterrupted ocean vistas. Stop to refuel at one of the seafood restaurants or cafes along the way.
Enjoy additional ocean views as you stroll amidst coastal vegetation on the sandy trail from Lake Brou to Potato Point. This track runs for 7 km (one way), winding past red sandy cliffs, glistening coastal lakes, headlands and untouched sections of beach.

Montague Island, just 8 km from shore, is a sanctuary for Australiaâs largest fur seal colony. You will also see little blue penguins and many other bird species. Whale watch in season or dolphin watch year-round. Guided island tours depart Narooma.
Naroomaâs warm, clear waters are optimal for snorkelling and diving. In fact, diving with seals is one of the areaâs highlights. The best time to do so is in September and October, when you might be accompanied by up to 100 of these creatures.
The whale watching season starts in June and wraps up in November. Whales come quite close to shore, on the search for krill. Pods of 10 whales, including orcas, often come very close to the boats.
To get acquainted with the South Coastâs maritime history, visit Naroomaâs Lighthouse Museum. Here, you will be able to see parts of the first lighthouse on Montague Island, including the original light, while learning about the areaâs past.
If natural history is more up your alley, or if youâre simply looking for photo ops, spend some time at Wagonga Headâs Australia Rock. This rock has an opening naturally shaped like the Australian mainland. You can peer through it to see all of Narooma.
On the opposite end of Bar Beach are the Glasshouse Rocks, estimated to be at least 440 million years old. The rock formation gives the Great Ocean Roadâs 12 Apostles a run for their money, in terms of being the most photographed rock formation in Australia.
Narooma is about an 8-hour drive from Melbourne and a 4-hour drive from Sydney. If you donât have access to a vehicle, take a combination of busses and trains, but journey time may double. The closest airport to Narooma is in Moruya, a 40-minute drive away, with direct flights from Sydney and Merimbula.
