As Batemans Bay is removed from big urban centres, you’re quite likely to spot some favourite Australian mammals on your getaway, just going about their business. Lots of animals call the region home, including kangaroos, wallabies and platypus. Make sure you look up as you walk around, because there just might be some local parrots in the trees. To optimise your wildlife spotting opportunities, you can for a walk along the many trails close to town, which take you by the coastline and beyond. Alternately, head to Birdland Animal Park, a small wildlife reserve in the area. You’ll be able to observe koalas, wombats and numerous bird species. While you’re here, you can visit the nursery to see some newborn baby animals or, if you dare, pick up a snake. If you don’t feel like walking the whole time, hop on the reserve’s train.


What to Do in Town


The town of Batemans Bay has quite a few activities for visitors of all ages. You can easily spend the afternoon at the miniature golf course, with challenging holes for both children and adults. To get some more exercise, you can head to the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife and if you’re hungry, stop for a bite at the gardens’ restaurant. There are quite a few shops in Batemans Bay, as well, where you can purchase everything you need – or want – like souvenirs and sweet treats from local bakeries.

As Batemans Bay is a seaside town, it goes without saying that locals and visitors have fresh seafood at their disposal. Simply stroll past the restaurants in the town centre and those along the Clyde River to check out their offerings. If you’d like a break from seafood one night, Batemans Bay also has restaurants of all price ranges which serve international cuisine, from Indian to Chinese to Italian. For an even greater selection, drive a short distance to the neighbouring towns of Nelligan and Mogo. On the first and third Sundays of each month, Batemans Bay plays host to country markets, where you can sample some of the region’s fresh produce.

Batemans Bay is set 150km from Canberra and 280km from Sydney. The easiest option for getting to Batemans Bay is to drive, but if you don’t have access to a vehicle, you can get to your destination via coaches departing both Sydney and Canberra.
